It just proves how loopy Lockyer is.
Calif. AG Wants Warning Label on Fries
By TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer
Fri Aug 26,10:37 PM ET

Potato chips and french fries could soon come with a warning label in California if the state's top attorney prevails in a lawsuit filed Friday against nine fast food chains and snack-food makers.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer asked for a court order requiring McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Frito Lay and other companies to warn consumers that their fries and chips may contain acrylamide, a chemical the state says causes cancer.

At least one of the companies disputes that, saying there is no evidence the substance is carcinogenic.

"In taking this action, I am not telling people to stop eating potato chips or french fries," Lockyer said. "I know from personal experience that, while these snacks may not be a necessary part of a healthy diet, they sure taste good."

But consumers should have the information needed to make informed decisions about their food, he said.

Acrylamide, a byproduct of chemicals and high heat, has been found at low levels in several foods. The lawsuit focuses on french fries and chips because they have more acrylamide than other foods, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Frito-Lay spokeswoman Lynn Markley said there was no scientific evidence that acrylamide causes cancer. She said it was counterproductive for the state to sue the companies when California regulators are setting standards for the chemical under Proposition 65, a state law that requires companies to notify the public about potentially dangerous toxins in food.

When risk levels for acrylamide were added to Proposition 65 in 1990, the chemical was generally thought of as an industrial agent, used in food packaging and to treat sewage, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

But in 2002, a Swedish National Food Authority study reported that acrylamide occurred naturally in some starch-rich foods as a result of cooking or heat processing.

Other studies have found no link between foods containing acrylamide and a higher risk of cancer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently assessing the chemical in food.

Representatives of several other companies named in the lawsuit did not return calls for comment Friday. The lawsuit was filed after business hours in the Central and Eastern time zones, where the companies are located.

Teresa Schilling, a spokeswoman for the attorney general, said that if the lawsuit succeeds the office will want to discuss with the companies the size of the warning labels and where they would appear on packaging.

"We don't want the warning to be alarming or excessively large," she said. "We want it to be simple and effective, and (we'll) be flexible about how it will work with each product."

Oh Bill ... thank you .... thank you ... thank you ...!!!

You have made my day ... Now I feel so warm and fuzzy. I just don't know how I have gotten through so much of my life without a blissnanny like you watching over me.

You see ... (sob) I don't live in California, which means I have to think for myself. I actually have to make (GASP!) decisions. I have to decide things for myself.

But in California that won't be necessary for much longer. You will decide everything ... for everybody. I am sure the sheeple will be very happy now that you have taken charge.

Before I go, have you got any openings for fry and chip inspectors? I'm real good at checking serial numbers ...

Acrylamide in foods? ICK! Thats the stuff we used to use to run gel electrophoresis. AckPth!

Dosage is what makes a poison.

My city water has arsenic, lead, radium, selenium and probably a host of prescription drugs that people have passed through their systems and urinated into the waterways. That's not going to stop me from drinking it, even though the kneejerk politicians in California would label it as a possible carcinogen.

Now handling your polyacrylamide gel with bare hands, and then licking them clean is going to make you mighty sick. Yup, I used to work with them too a lot of SDS-PAGE western blots.

In a proper society with smart caring well educated people idiots like Lockyer would wake up in the morning dead.

Why not ask for idiot labels on California Democrat politicians?
We tried that once, but it would have required labels for the people that voted for them as well, so it would have ended up being too expensive....

I know it's supposedly the fourth (fifth?) largest economy in the world and all, but why does anybody continue to do any kind of business in that state?

"In taking this action, I am not telling people to stop eating potato chips or french fries," Lockyer said. "I know from personal experience that, while these snacks may not be a necessary part of a healthy diet, they sure taste good."
So what he's saying is that these foods are dangerous to your health, but eat them anyway cause they taste good -- real leadership. He's setting these companies up for some major lawsuits.

There needs to be a warning label on AG Lockyer....

Warning: Under this label is a lieing 2-faced lieing 4-flushing lieing weasel lieing leftist...

or words to that effect.

I think they should serialize all fries and potato chips so when someone croaks from them it can be traced back to its origin. This way, lawyers have someone to sue. :D

Sometimes I really don't like my state. The weather is amazing, but the cost of living, nanny-state, and illegal immigration make me want to move. Oh, I can't get a 25 round mag and folding stock for a 10/22, cause it's SCARY!

I’m generally ambivalent about term limits, but in Bill’s case, I have NO uncertainty. Good! Only one more year of this clown to go.

Rumor has it that he may challenge for governor. If he gets elected, I may just finally have to pack up and leave (and I am a third generation native Los Angelena – family is all here in So Cal).

But dang! This joker’s getting on my nerves…

I'm sure I'll always miss the beaches and temperate climate.

Really? I know that UV causes cancer, but it also causes vitamin D which prevents cancer. There's plenty of beach in Florida, and the water's great. Well, when there's not a hurricane whipping thins up... :p

Oh, and yay for taking all the fun out of everything.

It's hype. Something the gov't can do to discourage behavior they don't like.

There's a state that requires doctors to tell people considering abortions that having an abortion increases your risk of breast cancer, even though there's no medical evidence that suggests this is true.

It's a was to control personal choice, when the government sees that choice as a bad thing. We can't ban it, so let's scare people instead.
