Hello all, I have (2) Butler Creek Steel Lips Magazines. They work very well in my 10/22, far better than the Hot Lips.

My question is how to clean/lubricate them. Ii have read that you can squirt some WD-40 and wipe them off. Since it appears that you cannot disassemble the magazine how does one clean them?

Thanks.

I use a paper towel sprayed with Break-Free CLP for the feed lips and a q-tip dipped in CLP for the follower, and follow with dry paper towels and q-tips to remove any oil. I'm using the plastic-lipped Hot Lips but IME they work just as good as the Steel Lips for 2/3 the price.

An interesting note though is that I rarely clean my 25-round Butler Creek mags because they work better dirty than they do clean in my 10/22.

I bought a Hot Lips and all it did was give me FTFs. The Steel Lips are as good as the factory rotary mags IMO.

Funny because the Ruger 10-round rotary mag that I have sucks. The Butler Creeks work significantly better for me, go figure.

my $.02:

hot lips work better than steel lips but a little oil on the follower tracks is probably a good idea since they travel so far and any friction can create FTF's when such a small movement is needed to feed a .22 round.

True, and the Butler Creek mags certainly work well, but I've found that they work better dry and dirty than they do clean. It doesn't make sense but hey it works for me. IMHO, if BC wanted customers to clean/lube their mags, they would've made them so that they disassemble. That said, I still clean my mags using my method I described in my first post in this thread after firing 300-500 rounds out of each. Of course they fail to feed after I clean them but after 50 rounds (two full mags) out of each they get dirty again and start working smoothly and reliably. Like I said, it doesn't make sense.

I have never tried hot lips, but I have some steel lips that have been running great and never cleaned. For me they have been more reliable than factory mags. :)

Make sure the spring is properly tensioned
Yep, I quit using mine for a while, then one day cleaned and re-tensioned it and it works fine (almost as good as steel lips). :)
