Hey y'all,

The CMP has recently posted sell-out notices for Service Grade Springfields (and a lot of ammo, etc.).

Has anyone ordered a Service Grade H&R Garand from them lately? I'm wondering what kind of condition they're down to now. I got a peach of a Field Grade at the south store a few years back, but I know the condition they send for mail orders in Service grade can vary a lot.

How they looking right now?

Thanks!

The condition will be no worse than what the CMP describes on their rifle sales web page.

The service grade I just received on the 8th was a 1 on the muzzle and a 2 on the throat. The stock is new. Ymmv

Edit: sorry, didn't catch the fact that you were looking at the Harrington

I was at the North Store yesterday. The H&R Garands looked in pretty good shape, but I did not measure ME or TE. What shocked me was the cheapest Garand in the shop was $950. and pricing went up from there. They had a good number of National Match guns and Sniper guns without scopes. Prices were $2,000-$3,000 if I remember correctly. They also had some Garands with a chamber block installed to make them .308.

They had plenty of Greek Ammo, 200 loose rounds in a 30cal ammo can for $98.

It wasn't too many years ago I was buying Danish and Greek returns for $279-$399 and ammo for $0.20/round. What a difference a few years make.

Fish: "The condition will be no worse than what the CMP describes on their rifle sales web page." tells me nothing; there is a range of characteristics in the stated in the CMP verbiage and they tend to ship the best they have on hand first, hence my question.

JJ: Thank you for answering my question!
Is the one you described an H&R?

The CMP also provides some of the best customer service out there should something go wrong. That being said, I don't think you'll be disappointed with whatever they send you.

To reiterate:
"Has anyone ordered a Service Grade H&R Garand from them lately? I'm wondering what kind of condition they're down to now."

I appreciate the good nature in which the responses were meant, but I would really appreciate an on-topic answer if someone has it. Thanks!

I bought a H&R Service Grade several months back. The rifle is in very good shape and has around 95% or more of the finish. The only disappoint is they failed to tell you that many of the Greek rifles have letters and gravity craved into the stock. Apparently that was a common practice. But the description is pretty close.
I bought a rack grade some time back when they had them and sent it back. The finish was completely gone, all the wood was cracked and the trigger assembly would fall out in your hands. The CMP service is excellent.

CMP does not "cherry pick" rifles to ship. First in, first out. For the customer, it is the luck of the draw.

Once a rifle is graded, it is put on the appropriate rack with other rifles of the same grading.

If you want a "cherry picked" rifle, go to one of the CMP stores and pick out your own from what is on display. I have done that a couple of times and it is a rewarding experience.

Service grades are generally nice. Of the ones I received, only the USGI stocks were not to my liking but the stocks were at least as good as the description on the CMP web site. Of the service grades that I have received that came with USGI stocks, I have replaced them, but that is me.

The advantage to the HRAs is many of them have not seen much service since they are all late to post Korean war era.

For a first Garand, i would get a Service Grade or better. My experience with Field Grades is they need some TLC.

Remember, the rifles have been used and are 50-60 years old. They are darn good looking grand old ladies.

You cannot gauge what you will get by what someone else received. Guys tend to post pics of the top end of grade description, not of the lower end.
You need to carefully read the Grade description and expect to get exactly that. If you get anything better it will be a bonus.
If you expect to get a rifle that someone posts pics of and not the greade description yet my be setting yourself up for big dissapointment

To the poster that commented how expensive the HRA's were at the North Store that is becuase they are temporarily sold out and only have the higher grades
Panic buyers have swamped CMP with orders and they arent restocking the stores until the get caught up wih mail orders

Not that it answers your question directly, but I have placed an order for one on 1/26. I'll be sure to post pics once I get it!

Last year when I went to the South Store, they all looked good to me. But I'm a novice/amateur with these rifles.
