CMP Update on Carbines

This might be a dumb CMP question. I'm active military so with my ID card and copies of my range quals I meet the requirements to buy a gun. Do they sell them at the Ohio location and if I drop buy there can I buy one and walk out the door? They are going on sale right about the time I am transferring and I don't want to miss out on this.

edit: I should have asked "Can I submit the paperwork so they can run the NICS checks and then drop by the store to pick up a rifle?" I'm going to be in transit for over 40 days but it would be nice to stop there when the store is open and get to pick one out.

You may still have to join an affiliated organization, but you ask them. I hear they are slow answering these days.

Submit the paperwork so they can get you in their system, and it makes a personal visit shorter. Until they announce that they'll have them at the north store location, I wouldn't bother making a tri; if they're at the south store, that's a heckuva drive for them to not have them.

They do the NICS check when you pick up the rifle, as per the norm. It's electronic, so ususally shouldn't take too long. when i went, i submitted my paperwork AND had the NICS check done, so it took a while.

They have given repeated messages that the are NOT accepting any paperwork.

From the CMP web site;

"At this time no decisions have been made as to grading, pricing, or limits. We are not accepting orders or establishing waiting lists at this time!!

NOT ACCEPTING ORDERS AT THIS TIME!!"

I've seen some rumors about the carbines, that they are from Korea and are terrible, that they are from Italy and will be incredibly expensive, or some combination of both. The pictures seem to indicate the carbines are in good condition and are from Italy. Does anyone have any solid info on price?

I love the picture of the warehouse loaded with crates of M1 carbines. Saaaweeeeetttttt

I saw that they are not taking orders or paperwork now, I was hoping that at some point in March I could submit the papers. Being active military makes me a member of one of the "special affiliates" or whatever the wording was. What I don't want to have happen is for me to take off in April, then go to place an order in May and have them out of carbines. Here is the quote.

I’m in the U.S. military. Am I still required to belong to an affiliated club?
No. The military services are special affiliates. A copy of your current/retiree military ID card serves to prove as membership in a CMP affiliated organization.

I also just saw in the FAQs that the rifles are in Anniston and that because the serial numbers are assigned to you, you can't just go and pick one out. That answers my question, I could probably pick up my carbine in person but I would have to do it in Alabama.

A friend of mine ordered some 15 and 20 round magazines from Sportsmans Guide. Has anyone used a 20 rounder or have any input on them? I realize that unless they are GI spec the reliability is a crap shoot.

Link? Does that mean there aren't going to be any in the North Store? If that's the case, I need to get my "mail-in" paperwork ready......

Not to hijack the thread, but I do not find the U.S. .30 Carbine on the ATF's list of C&R (except for the the M2 and the Iver Johnson), so does that mean that these do NOT have to be logged in as C&R when we get them?

OK to keep this straight in my head.
While I have a Honorable Discharge and my DD-214 will show that I was active military service, I still need to join a "Garand" type club to be eligible for the M1's?

Thanks.

M1 carbines are most definitely C&R.

Yes, but if you are already a member of the VFW or American Legion that counts. If you use the link in the very first post, and go to "Sales" on the right side it will give you the eligibility requirements. In those requirements is another link to all of the affiliated groups that will satisfy the CMP. I think (I didn't look) that participating in 4-H shooting or even CMP sporter matches counts. It will also list a large group of shooting organizations you can join to meet the requirement.

Eightball,

I saw that the guns are in Anniston in the FAQs, it was the very last question.

*sigh* Looks like mail order for me, then.
I'm sure they will be at the North Store too, maybe not at first. Check the CMP Forums.
I'm not willing to stake "getting one or not getting one" on a "maybe not at first"--I want one, NOW *laughs*

any clue how much these are going to go for???

We should have pricing by Monday, according to Orest. Rumor has been $450 to $500 for Rack grade and $500+ for Service grade. But thats just rumors.

Confirmation

Scott,

You have the same information I do on the pricing date. No solid info on what the pricing levels will be for the two grades of carbines.

Rather than speculation, I'm going to wait not-so-patiently for the facts.

John

Yea, there will be gangs doing drive-bys with M1 Carbines everywhere in a couple of months
Probably be the same bangers doing it now with the M1 garands and Kimber .22's
