Colt commander? OR Sig Carry?

i have an opportunity to get a colt combat commander for 600 dollars, its not in perfect shape, but decent. my dilemma is that i could get the colt, get a trigger, sights, grips, bobtail it and have it coated black and be at about the same cost as a new sig carry nitron....would i just be better off starting with the sig? help me out guys

Since you used the phrase, "just starting off," I'll assume that you are looking for your first carry gun.

I believe that a carry gun is something that you should know intimately. What this means to me is that all functions that would need to be performed with the handgun should be a matter of reflex rather than an action requiring thought.

I once read a quote someplace that went something like...."professionals don't practice until they get it right, they practice until they can't get it wrong." I think that this statement articulates what I'm trying to say pretty well.

With this being said, I'd vote for the Sig. The 1911 is just going to take more training/practice and a longer time to become proficient with.

I own both, too. Sig all the way. Better sights. Way better trigger. Checked front strap. Checkered steel mainspring housing. 500+ rounds so far with zero malfunctions. Got mine new for $860 (versus $900 for a bare bones blued Colt Commander). Sig has their act together with their current 1911s. Some of the best out there today.

I currently carry a p229 in .40 and I have a full size sig tac ops 1911, just havent had any personal experience with the commander sized sig

Sorry, I misunderstood the post. Due to a bad experience with a Sig 1911 long ago, I don't even register 1911 when someone says Sig. I thought you were considering a 220 or something.

I have handled both. Colt has slimmer profile, but if thats not one of the prime criteria then I recommend Sig. The only reason I didnt buy Sig was because I went with DW Vbob.

See if somehow you can shoot them. Some ranges lets you rent guns to try out.....

I carry my Colt Commander (slightly modified, 4lb trigger, wrap around grip, polished feed ramp) when I'm off duty, IWB holster from Blackhawk and never looked back. Duty gun is the XD .40.

While I think the used Colt Combat Commander is a better buy and could be customized for a lot less, if what you really want is something that already has all of the options you want built into it, then I would say go with the SIG Carry Nitron.

While I can't speak to your level of comfort with the platform I'm a bit concerned about an apples to oranges comparison. A bobtail changes more than just the appearance so debating how to bring the cost of a used Colt up to the price of a new Sig isn't the best of strategies. You really need to evaluate which works best for your needs and be reliable.

If it were me and the Colt wasn't previously butchered I'd opt for it and a trip to the pistolsmith for $400 in reliability work. Of course not everyone has a local option for 1911 work so again, you must evaluate your circumstances.

Remember too, there are other Commander size and CCO models available in close proximity to your price range. Good luck.

If it is an orginal configuration Commander, I would choose that...it is much more comfortable to carry than the Sig and can be easily be made to function 100% reliably. I am not a fan of beaver tail grips for concealed carry.

an extended beavertail has already been installed on the colt, very poorly installed so that would need to be reworked

For me it would really depend on the condition of the Colt. All the work your talking about doing can be expensive depending on who does it.

Sig...every day and Twice on Sunday. If I could afford them, I wouldn't carry anything else. They are the Audi of guns: finely crafted in Germany, pricey, but you get what you pay for. And unlike 1911s you don't get a $3000 target pistol you are afraid to drop or a cheep GI model that nees $1000s in "upgrades" A Sig is a shooter right out of the box. There is a reason the SEALs carry Sigs...just sayin.
