I've read dozens of threads and rave reviews about the comp-tac MTAC holster and I decided to bite the bullet and buy one. I'd rather buy a crossbreed, but I like that you can buy new kydex for the MTAC should you decide to sell the weapon and buy a new one. For $35 or so bucks you can have a partially new holster for your old, familiar holster instead of trying to sell off a used holster and buying another new one. I really like that.

My question is this:
Has anyone here purchased the Comp-tac Spartan? It costs less, but comes without the backing which leaves a few fasteners exposed. Not like screws digging into you, just the flat fasteners. It seems to me that this wouldn't bother me too much. I typically carry a glock 19 rtf2 or a commander sized 1911 with lots of checkering and aggressive grips, so it isn't exactly like I'm sensitive in that area. The tiny fasteners won't get all hot or cold, either...my body should keep them at a constant temp. If anything, it seems to me that the deletion of the outer layer will make the holster just a bit less bulky and thus more appealing to daily carry.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with these holsters. Try as I might, I can't find any local store that has either version in stock to even look; hence my apprehension to either product. I have seen the crossbreed in person, so I'm tempted to just buy. The comp-tac's modularity appeals to me a little more than the crossbreed.

I have both the Spartan and the MTAC; I think the MTAC is more comfortable. For a thin profile I use the FIST thin kydex.

The Crossbreed Supertuck is supposedly a fantastic holster but the unprotected muzzle wears out your pants over time (see the link). I would think the MTAC would wear out your pants less, unless of course you get the 'slide' version.

Get the Tucker Answer if you want to protect your gun from the kydex by having the kydex leather lined. http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/answeriwbs.html

From what I hear the Crossbreed/MTAC/Answer hardware is interchangeable. Get MTAC/Answer Kydex clips if you don't want to scratch your car. Get Crossbreed metal clips if you want them to be rugged.

I carry a G23 rtf2 in my MTAC and I've always found it to be comfy. I haven't tried the spartan so I can't speak on how that may or may not feel. That being said I don't feel as if the MTAC needs to be any thinner than it is. Jackal mentioned the answer, which a close friend of mine uses to carry his full size 1911 and he loves it. I'll be picking one up myself for my blued colt delta elite as well because the leather lined kydex appeals to me. Long story short, I don't think you would be unhappy with any of the holsters mentioned. BTW I have the slide version of the MTAC and haven't had any issues with it wearing out my pants, the rtf2 on my grip does a number on my shirts though!

I have the spartan and use it daily. The way the holster sits means that if you're wearing underwear, it will be in between you and the fasteners. No problems with poking or temperature. The only real difference left between the spartan and the MTAC is the finish which I don't think is worth the price difference.

Get either one. If the screw backs bother you, just put some moleskin backing on it. It is cheaper to get the Spartan and put some 1.99 moleskin on it. Maybe a little thinner too, not really sure though.

warning Comptac users
I sometimes use a comp tac minotaur holster for my kahr pm9 and had been very satisfied with it.. UNTIL NOW.
I JUST. discovered that it's possible for the kydex part near the trigger guard to get hung up on the trigger while reholstering. I was even able to dry fire the gun by pushing it downward. it doent happen easily, but it shouldn't happen at all. I don't know how comp tac's other holsters for other guns work, but mine has got me pretty upset/worried. as I said, I just discovered this and haven't decided what to do about it..

Thanks for the warning, krustito. That's always a concern for me when I'm carrying a glock. That's why I hate buying any holster without being able to try my gun in it first. I've already decided on the crossbreed for other reasons, though. Thank you to everyone else for the replies, as well.

I don't know if you can tell what's going on here, but there is a kydex tab where the trigger guard is, and if gun is holstered crookedly (easy to do at 5oclock) the tab can get lodged into the trigger guard. VERY UNSAFE. (this is for the kahr pm9)

He undercuts crossbreed prices ever so slightly...I'll have to contact him and see what his lead times look like. Thanks for the (timely) heads up. I was actually ordering today.

You can make something malfunction if you work hard enough. Looks like the leather has to be bent pretty far backward for that to happen. No problem since I have plenty of fat to keep it together. How did Comp Tac respond when you informed them of this issue?

I just ordered the holster from post #11. It looks to have all the features I need or want, and way cheaper than the Comp Tac stuff. The guy is really friendly and I received shipment notification just a few minutes after my order was confirmed (since he had one in stock).

For anyone wondering, the holster I ordered from the gentleman mentioned in an above post turned out to be of excellent quality. No squeaks, tight fit and very comfortable. I saved a few bucks as opposed to crossbreed or comp-tac and I see no negatives. The metal clips and hardware seem sturdy enough. The kydex isn't interchangeable, but at these prices...another complete holster will cost me less or the same as a comp-tac kydex replacement holster body + shipping for another weapon.

I'm very pleased. :D

I have two MTACs and they are super comfy and distribute the weight of the pistols extremely well.

I have a Comp-Tac M-Tac for the Glock 19, I find it a little thick in the backing section. I wish I would have tried the Spartan instead. I have the 1-3/4 over clips. I haven't worn it since I got my Fobus holster. See if anyone near your area has one you can try out. If you get the Spartan, you can always add mole skin to cover the fasteners to make it smoother with out to much extra thickness.

The holster I bought made by Tommy I mentioned above. It's just the right thickness. I'll be buying more of his holsters. Simple and effective. Priced just right below the competition, too.
