Ok I cant afford an Anschutz so what about the above? I was originally thinking a semi for the convenience but some dont cycle the match ammo very well from what is mentioned on here.

Id like a wood stocked .22 that job #1 is accuracy.

Will be used for plinking, serious paper punching but not so serious as to be competing, and whistle piging (my .223 is getting expensive for that).

Open sights on it would be ok and nice, but to be honest Ill most likely put a rimfire scope on it.

Not wanting it too heavy, less than 7 lbs. My .223 varmint rifle is heavy enough.

And price is also important. Less than $500 and preferable under $400.

This makes the MK II BV a top choice but the MK II BRJ is a nice looking gun.

If any of you have owned/shot either of them or preferably both Id like to hear about them.

I hear great things about the CZ rimfires accuracy but what about the MK II's are they as nice shooting?

Thanks in advance!

And yes I will be looking at rimfire central

Given those choices...if it were me, I would save and hold out until I could buy an Anschutz. My father always stressed.... might as well start with what you're going to wind up with.;)

Get a CZ. I have their 452 Varmint in 17HMR. It's a great rifle for not too much money. If you're going to be shooting from the bench a lot the CZ 453 has a nice single set trigger.

CZ452 is the way to go. They are super accurate and very well made. For $15 you can buy a trigger kit and take it down to 8 ounces if you want. Nice walnut stock, all steel receiver, tight chamber and excellent barrel. Safety works backwards which is strange but you get used to it. I have a .22LR and .17HM2. The .22 will shoot 1/2" 5-shots at 50 yards all day, .17HM2 is honest 1 moa at 100. .22 is good at 100, but shooter error becomes more evident at distance, probably because of the rifle's light weight. Check out the CZ forum on www.rimfirecentral.com and you'll become a fan. Beware! CZ rimfire rifles are VERY addictive!!

Back in 2003 I ordered a stainless Savage Mark II 22 RF with iron sights. After reading on the Internet how good they were in some threads over at rimfire central. Bear in mind I before I bought this Savage I already owned some good shooting 22 RF such as Anschutz 141, Suhl 150, Remington 541T, CZ 452 Trainer.

The Savage I got was a disappointment to say the least. The rear sight would not go down far enough to get POI within 10" at 50 yards. It did not shoot well at all. In fact it was the worst shooting 22 RF I've ever owned. Just about everything about it was sloppy and crude.

Around 2005 I bought a CZ 453 Varmint. Eventually I put a better scope on it after I realized how good of RF shooter it was out of the box. My vote would be for a CZ 452 or CZ 453 Varmint over the Savage any day of the week.

CZ 452 is a great rifle. I like it because not only is it a great shooter, but it feels like its big brother my 550 American 243 and not like a kids toy gun. They are amazingly accurate and will not break the bank to buy it. I love all my CZ rifles and pistols best bang for the buck.

+1 for CZ 452 Varmint with trigger kit or CZ 453 Varmint.

CZ but try for the new 455. CZ has standardized their recievers for this year and the catalog says caliber changes will be available, so .7hmr to .22 should be an option.

I have 2 CZ452's, a Lux Special and an American in .22lr. Cheap to shot and very accurate. With better cheap bulk ammo, Either one will hit a quarter at 50 yards with a slight edge to the Lux with target ammo. I convinced that it will shoot better than I can, after breaking it and free floating the barrel.
Some guys have real good luck with the Savage but I can't bring myself to buy one. To me it's about like driving a Rambler or Toyota. I don't care how good they are, they will always be an ugly imitation of something better.

I have both a CZ452 Varmint and a Savage MKII BV. With my two rifles, they are very close to the same with accuracy, but the CZ might be a bit more accurate. When I got the CZ I was hoping for a HUGE difference in accuracy but was a bit dissapointed. Don't get me wrong though, I am happy with it. The big differences are the quality of the CZ is a lot nicer. It is a higher quality gun for sure. Also, add a Brooks or similar trigger kit and it makes it even a better choice. Either way, they are both great guns though. My BV has always been a good accurate gun.

Erma/Iver Johnson "M1 Carbine" 22

Excellent shooters. Many missing the rear sight, but if you use a scope so what? I bought one missing the rear sight and replaced it with a slightly modified real M1 carbine milled rear sight. Triggers on these rifles are excellent. If you shoot offhand you will love it. Last one I bought was $175.00 minus the rear sight. Magazines cost a ton so make sure you get one with the gun.
I have a cz 452 American and it is just as accurate as the varmint. Russian CM2s are very accurate. I do have an Anschutz 54, but for general target practice the Erma gets the most use. Really helped my offhand scores improve in service rifle competition. Plus they just plain look cool.

Supposedly the CZ 452 Varmint isn't joined to the stock in as good a way as is the American model, leading to some disappointment when people compare the two. Worth looking into.

I grew up shooting a "miniature Mauser" with a lovely stock, and it helped me win an award and promotion in USMC boot camp in 1966. It's gone and I've been looking for another like it, and I think the CZ Lux is going to fit the bill. By the way, my dad also gave me a nickel-plated 9mm pistol which he then took back from me and gave to Audie Murphy when he came to visit. They were old poker buddies in France.

If barrels are cheap that could be quite nice.

Where did you hear this? Ill look into it on rimfirecentral

So far the word is the CZ's....

Any other .22's under $500 that can nearly match an Anschutz etc? I have never fired one and only held one in a shop once but they seem nice but not for that much $$$

Love my Savage MkII ( Dicks GVXP model ) , replace the glass that came with it with w/Mueller APV 4.5-14x40mm. It shoots darn well , think I have $300 total in it with Warne rings.

I own and have owned several (8 or so) CZ rimfires. Every one turned into excellent shooters after 1000-2000 rnds. I've never owned a Savage rimfire so I really can't say how they compare.

The CZ's do look nice. And from rimfirecentral seem to shoot well.
But......@ $150 more than a Savage makes it a hard choice. That money is part of a scope right there.

CZ if it is priced the same as Savage BV. Hard to find one shoot as well as Savage at that price range.

Ordered the CZ today.

Now I just need to decide on what to scope it with. Not wanting to spend much more than $200.

Wanting at least 4.5x14 but may consider as much as 6x18. Not sure how I want to go yet.

Will be used for whistle pigs, paper and just random plinking.

Any Ideas folks?

when I got my "first" CZ.......a 452........it put my Ruger 77/22 to shame.........sold the Ruger to by another CZ......a 452FS.......and soon after a CZ 527fs......wish I could afford more CZs
