Welcome to the Centerfire Match for the month of December! This match is open to any centerfire rifle. This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 50yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 100yds.

There are Three Rifle Classes in the magnified division (only one for the non-magnified division):
->Unlimited/Benchrest Rifles (highly modified/custom rifles, machine rests, heavy rifles (over 20lbs), very high magnification optics [over 20x] may be used).
->Target Rifles (modified rifles, rests, heavy rifles (over 10lbs), high magnification optics- over 10x [with an upper limit of 20x] may be used).
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles). Rests/sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class, but shooting sticks (either the crossed or walking stick variety) are allowed. Use of a sling is encouraged. Shoots may be taken from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class.

50 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image in the link below. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire one shot at each ornament as well as the star. Scored as one point for cracking each ornament (cutting the edge), two for shattering each (a shot lying completely inside); add an additional 2pts for tipping the star (cutting the edge), or 5pts for knocking it off the tree (shot lying completely within)...for a total possible score of 35pts.

100 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo (or load, if you care to divulge your secret recipe), Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before 12:00AM (local time) next year. ;)

That looks like a tough target! I may not be man enough to try this ...

Hey, Mav, was there a final tally for the centerfire Turkeyshoot? I looked, but didn't find one.

Shoot...I knew I forgot something. I'll get right to it!

I thought it looked fun....until I printed it.
Challenging can be good...right? :D

Speaking of challenging...the star is a bit on the small side (in other words: I don't know if a .224cal. bullet will fit in the lines), so to make it possible to still attain the 5pts. for that target, just keep the bullet within the five points of the star.

BTW, when properly sized the "Merry Christmas Ornament" should measure roughly 1.7cm. or a bit less than 11/16in.

:)

That'll make this target much easier, Maverick. Thanks. :uhoh:

Nah....challenging is good! :D
I've had some encouraging results reloading for the 6.5 so far.
Might even hit a couple of those ornaments??

Hat's off to anyone who aces this one! It won't be easy.
Some of the shooters here could probably do it though

...but you loose any advantage by making it more difficult to attain the higher value for both the ornaments and the star. That said, if you completely obliterate the ornament or star I think it's only right to attain the higher value. Additional bonus points for anyone using a 15in. artillery piece or larger...but you have to include video evidence! :D

Can someone save this here has a PDF or word doc. This way we all have the exact same target. I've scaled it onto 8.5 x 11, but it still doesnt look right to me.

Coming right up...

I've scaled it onto 8.5 x 11, but it still doesnt look right to me.
That's probably because I made it.

Wow! This looks really fun! I think I'm going to try and jump in on this one. I'll see if I can find some time to go shooting...;)

Welcome, Matthew!

Thanks, whether or not I can participate also depends on whether I can get the bolt unjammed on my 30-06...:uhoh:

If I can't, I'll just try it with my AK or something. :D

What's the story? Overcharged load?

Yeah, bought some reloads at a gun show (I think they were reloads). Anyway, stupid idea. The case ruptured in the chamber, now my bolt is stuck, and etc...

Sorry about the thread hi-jack btw...

No worries...I did ask.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but even if you get it unlocked have it looked at by a competent smith before venturing out with it again. Also, if you don't already handload (and you bought a large quantity of cartridges) now might be the time to start. Just pull the bullets, dump the powder (makes for good high-nitrogen fertilizer), resize (without decapping pin, in order to retain the primer), recharge with a safe amount of the proper powder (it's always best to consult a manual and start with the minimum listed charge), and reseat the pulled bullet...presto, new (safe) loaded cartridges.

:)

Okay, just making sure... :)

I might have to look into doing that. I'd hate to waste the rest of the cartridges.

Anyway, just to make sure I'm doing this right; when I go to print out the target, I scale it to 100%, right?

You got it, there is a .pdf in post no. 15 if that makes things easier.

:)

I'm not proud of this score, but here's the target.
It's hard to tell from this mess, but in general the rifle shot this load fairly consistently low & to the right.
I tried to adjust my POA a bit to compensate on a few of those and that didn't work out too well.
I ended up with a score of 2, (left myself plenty of room for improvement).
1920 Carl Gustafs 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser
43.5Gr. RL-22, 142Gr Sierra HPBT
4 x12 Nikon
100 yards
bench with sandbags
temp 31, wind 5-10

It's a hard target...perhaps even a bit too hard. I think I'll use heavier ornaments next year. ;)

Ya, it's not an easy target, but it's a fun one to shoot.
I'll probably have to try this one again.
Shooting this target, I remembered when I was a kid I broke an ornament with my toy dart gun all the way from the next room, about a 12' shot.
Apparently my marksmanship was better when I was about age 6.
