December Centerfire Match:

Yep, end of month...although we might end up extending this month's match into next month if that helps anyone to get out to the range (same goes for the rimfire match).

:)

10-4, we can make it a bi-monthly match for a while. Between weather and the holidays I know that this time of year is a bit hectic.

:)

Yup, with all this rain today and tomorrow, I can't get to the range do to traveling the rest of the week. Guess Monday will have to be the day I try this!

Been raining quite a bit here as well. I did manage to get out once, but only briefly and doubt that things will change much until the second week of January.

:)

I sprained my ankle at the beginning of the month, so I haven't been able to get out shooting. So if you're extending the match into January, then I should be able to participate. :D

Hope you're all having a Merry Christmas! :)

All right, I finally managed to get my .223 to the range this morning. New glass on it - Nikon Buckmaster 6.5-24 X 40 Mil-Dot. Got real lucky, first shot was 2" low at 100 so I fired another to check it. Almost same hole so I cranked 'er up 16 clicks (1/8 MOA clicks) and fired 3 on a fresh target. Same hole - almost centered. Fired 5 to prove it on another fresh target. Jagged hole, just left of center (target was tilted a tiny bit and I was holding on the cross hatch lines so I was off level.

Stapled the Christmas tree to the bottom of the target and started shooting. I was loading singly to give the barrel 10-15 seconds to cool between shots.

Four 2's, twelve 1's and as always, a flyer. Missed the star completely about 1/4" left!!!!! Total score 20.

Particulars: Savage 10FLP, left hand .223, 24" heavy barrel, Choate "Ultimate Sniper" stock, Nikon 6.5-24 X 40 Mil-Dot glass. Range 100 yards, indoors from the bipod front rest with adjustable rear monopod. Ammo, Winchester FBI surplus, 62grain hollow point match quality 5.56.

Mav, I believe this is the hardest target you've given us yet.

This match got expensive! I found the ammo that my .223 bolt gun really really likes and it's in limited supply but on sale until the end of the month at Midway. Had to dip into savings to lay in a supply of the stuff.

62 grain barrier defeating open tip match 5.56 X 45 made by Winchester for the FBI. I had bought 100 rounds just to try it and yesterday was the first time I'd shot the stuff. WOW, good stuff. Wife saw the targets last night and practically ordered me to get some more of that ammo before they run out of it.

Could only afford another 200 rounds, but as close as I live, UPS Ground usually delivers overnight if I get an order in to them by 6:30 p.m. They put their day's shpments on a big brown trailer during the day and UPS out of the Lenexa, KS distribution center picks up the trailer about 9 - 9:30 p.m. It gets sorted, comes out of the Lenexa center and down to Wichita overnight and gets delivered the next day. Overnight for ground rates ain't too shabby and the tracking number shows it's in Wichita, "Out For Delivery".

KSCCHTrainer, that is some fine shooting there :).

Doesn't look like I will be back out to try this one this month :uhoh:.

Next month, that's going to be the plan; I'll try the tree targets anyway, just to test my skill :scrutiny:.

Thanks talldragon,
I'd never have been able to do that well on an outdoor range in KS, what with all the wind we normally have here.

Since the 10FLCP-K .308 isn't producing the accuracy I was hoping for, even with match ammo, I decided to sell it off. Got almost what I paid for it plus just over 500 rounds of my .223's favorite ammo! Figgered strike now while the iron's hot -

Gonna put some of the money into a good 4" .22LR revolver for the wife to plink with.

The accuracy was acceptable, but it was right at MOA (1" at 100 yards) with the ammo I was using - Prvi Partizan 168 grain match ammo. In all fairness, I hadn't run enough ammo through it to get it to settle down so once the bore got all the little noogies worn down in 500 rounds or so, it would have been a real tack driver.

I just had to quit shooting it. My cardiologist kept dinging me because the Medtronic pacemaker was showing diagnostic glitches from the recoil.

My 10FLP Tactical in .223 which is also mounted in a real heavy Choate "Ultimate Sniper" stock doesn't spike it, so I'm okay with that. As you saw in the target for the match, it's well under MOA with the FBI surplus/factory seconds ammo. That Choate stock weighs almost as much as the action and barrel do. Totel weight of everything is about 12 pounds and off the bipod it doesn't move much under recoil.

The barrel, it turns out is a 22" Shilen stainless 1" OD heavy barrel that's been black finished to match the action. I'm the third owner of this thing and I put the Choate stock on it. The aluminum V blocks in the stock really lock it down and it's almost as good as a bench rest gun. Certainly one of the best I've ever owned anyway.

I actually got a bit more than I paid for it out of the .308 and it went to a good home.

Now I gotta order some more of that FBI surplus ammo from Midway before they run out or the sale ends (31st of this month). It's $10.99 a box, pretty good for match ammo even if it is cosmetic seconds. Here's a target from the .223 - 5 shots, 100 yards indoors measured out with the free "On Target" software.

Yep, not too bad, but certainly not worth risking your health over. BTW, that is a heck of a group for a factory load...I can certainly see why you want more of it.

:)

Oops:

Just realized that I forgot to add the results. Here goes:

Caddisflied takes the top spot in the Sporting/Optics Div. with a score of 2, and KSCCHTrainer takes the top seat in the Unlimited Target/Optics Div. with a score of 20!

Here's a link to the new match for February.
