Do you own a Russian Military scope?
Do you like it?
Does it keep a Zero when removed and replaced?

What else do I need to know?
I have been pondering installing a POSP 4, 6, or 8x42mm Russian Military scope on my AK for a little fun, but a gun shop owner told me that they are junk and I will not be happy with it. No warranty and impossible to return ??????? Does he just want me to spend my money at his shop or is he really sincere?

I’m also a lil’ confused with all the web sites descriptions and styles of side mounts offered for these scopes.
My side mount:

http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=16698&cat=265&page=1

One site has two options for two styles of scopes "PSL/ROMAK-3,Tiger, Dragunov,-POSP8x42SVD" or this one "AK, SAR, VEPR, SAIGA-POSP8x42AK".

The AK one?

And another has The VM mount that will fit rails found on SAIGA, VEPR, SAR-1, -2, and the TM mounting will fit rails found on PSL, Romak-3 and their modifications with installed side-mounting rail.

HUH?

Any info on these scopes is a great help; I think I found every site on earth that sells them but no reviews to settle my nerves enough to drop a Benjamin.

Some link to the scopes.

Yes, I have one. Russian PSO-1 "v", which is a 4x. The gunshop owner is wrong, they are good little scopes. They're built for the Russian military, so they're durable. There's no magic, in that its still a small objective lens, so light-gathering won't match a 40mm scope, but its darn good for its size.

And yes, it holds a zero. And the range-finding reticle is way-cool.

They hold Zero every time, I've got a Red dot for my AK and a 6x42 I use for my SU-16. The 6x42 is an -awesome- scope and seems for my needs anyway, about as close to perfect as a long range scope gets. Bright, clear, tough enough to beat somone to death with without loosing zero.

They're a touch on the crude side, because they dont fit on AR-15s and they're from yaknow..the red side. Joking aside, I'll never buy western glass again.

The shop owner is full of crap. Dollar for dollar, any of the russian stuff beats stuff over here by a long shot. Any of the military grade optics, scopes or red dots like kobras and PK series, will be quite rugged and reliable. They also do hold zero when removed and reinstalled, assuming you have the mount adjusted to fit tight (a 5 minute job).

And I recommend freedom optics for AK stuff. www.freedomoptics.com

Anything that fits an AK rail will fit your rifle. The SVD mounts are slightly different (the scope will mount, but it will be farther rearward, which isnt good on AKs), so just find a scope that says 'AK mount' on freedom optics. :)

I'd go for a red dot before a scope. A scope on an AK just doesn't seem like a good match. The AK isn't all that accurate anyway. A red dot would be a match for what the rifle was meant to do. Just my opinion of course...

A scope would let you wring as much accuracy out of your AK as YOU are capable of... But I sold mine. It was a fun toy, but not good for much. I use a PK-01V red dot now, instead. Much faster follow up shots, better sight picture, and better accuracy then with the iron sights.

got mine from nightvision, works great, slid right on the factory installed rail on my SAR-1, uses regular AA batteries.

I've had very good experience with a POSP 4x24; the quality is excellent, the optics are remarkably clear and sharp, the reticle is the best I've ever used (why don't American-made scopes use chevrons???), they do hold zero when removed and replaced, they are built to take all kinds of abuse and still work, and the reticle lights up for low-light shooting. The 4x24 also has a nifty extendable sunshade that keeps glare off the lens (and rain, BTW). I've gotten 2.5 MOA with the combination from a cold barrel, and it makes 200-yard shooting much, much easier. You can still use the iron sights, but the scope blocks your field of view from 9:00 to 12:00.

I'd recommend going with a 4x rather than a 6x or 8x on an AK. The 6x and 8x would be better suited to a Dragunov, and the 4x is plenty for 200 or 300 yards, particularly given the good optical clarity.

The one think I didn't like about the POSP was that it made the rifle less suitable for close-range defensive shooting, which would be true of pretty much any receiver-mounted magnified optic. So I'm selling the POSP to fund an Ultimak scout rail and forward-mounted red-dot, but I still think the POSP is a fantastic scope.

BTW, got mine from www.nightvisionweb.com and had excellent service.

The POSP 4x24 is uber cool on an AK. Built like a TANK. Clear and lighted reticle is really neat.

No worries about holding zero. The side mount on the WASR took some filing to get it cleaned up enough for the scope to slide on. Don't actually need to use the clamp it fits that tightly.

Got mine from Kalinka Optics. Wherever you get one I think you will be impressed with it.

I have a PSOP 4x24 on my Saiga 7.62x39, PSOP 6x24 on my 223, and PSOP 6x42 on my 308. I have been happy with all of them.
Have gotten 1" or less 3 shot groups at 100yds with my 308. Haven't gotten around to shooting for group size with the other two.

I got my BP02A scope mount from Tantal at the link above. It is a good tough mount that come with a rail on top instead of a dedicated scope. I wasn't sure what I was getting into so I bought a cheap Simmons 1.5-5X scope to put on it. I like the scope and the mount. I have it mounted on a Vepr K in 7.62X39. It is as accurate as I am and more.

After zeroing it in, the first time I pulled the mount off and put it back on, the impact point moved about 4" or so at 100 yards. Not pinpoint accurate, but very good for the plinking I do. Anyway, I pulled it out again earlier today as my Dad and I shot up some clay pigeons we set at the base of a hill. We were shooting at about 100 yards and I was hitting them just fine. I swear the impact point had moved back to my zero so I now have some confidence that the mount will keep the scope pretty close. I am very happy with my mount and it just looks really cool. :) I could do almost as good with the iron sights, but 5X magnification helps target acquisition a lot for me.

Tantal has lots of mounts, red dot scopes, and scopes to choose from depending on what you want.

I bought a Saiga 7.62x39mm when they were first imported in 1994. I ordered the rifle imported with the factory 3.5x20 scope and mount.
This scope

and this mount.

It has been on/off the rifle dozens of times in the last 11 years and has never needed adjustment.
I also ordered a VEPR 308 in 1998 and ordered the Pilad VOMZ 4x32 scope/mount imported for it.

It has been on/off dozens of times and has held zero just fine.
The quality of the Russian scopes is very good and I would put the 4x32 up againist any brand of scope in the $300-$400 range for brightness/image quality.
