I am going to order a HIVIZ front fiber optic for my M&P. Which color do you think would work best for my front sight?

I'm to leave the rear alone and only change the front.

I'm coming to the conclusion that green is best on a sunny day, red is best on an cloudy day. Some have easily switchable insert rods, I have a mix of green and red on a variety of guns. Preference is not strong enough to switch red for green or vice-versa.

The sight is for my carry gun so the color that works best in a variety of different situations including low-light would be preferable.

Firetrucks

Not sure this is relevant, but... Have you noticed that a lot of new emergency response equipment, ie firetrucks, are that yellow green color. The same color is being used to replace the old yellow street signs. It turns out that green is one of the colors that is easiest to distinguish in low light.

I see they are making lasers that color too. Supposedly much brighter than a red laser.

I'm just curious how green will contrast with the white dot rear sight. Its easier to visualizean orange or red front sight because of the revolvers I've shot.

The red front sight seems the most popular from what I've seen on the web.

Hmmmmmmmm.

I know competition favors the red sights but that would be daytime or indoor shooting with good overhead light. What about conditions of low light or overcast cloudy days??

hmmmm. Not very decisive. It appears the green has one though. I'll have to try it out and I'll post some pics when I get it done. Thanks all.

I just got a fiber optic for my Buckmark 22 - only the front sight. But, it comes with changable light pips - 3 red and 3 green.

I find that the red works best because its easier to see in lower light than the green.

Tried the red on a S&W Performance Center for hunting, Ok for normal daylight senarios, not so good for low light early morning and late evening. Green shows up much better.

green is always more noticeable in low light or indoors. something to do with the wavelength of blue-green light. the only reason blue is not used is because our sky is blue so there would be no contrast. red is on the opposite side of the light spectrum(wavelength).. red contrasts better with our blue sky so in bright, daytime use red is slightly better than green. in otherwords: green for low-light or indoors(law enforcmnt), red for bright outdoor use(hunting)

In practice, its not quite that simple. The ones I have it seems the red are much more efficient at picking up light than are the green, which makes red better in lower light, but in bright sunlight the red are too bright and glare. The green aren't so much help on a dim day but are great in the bright sunlight.

At least with the sights I have the differences in efficiency of the light pipe pickup outweights the fact that normal eyes see green a little better than red.

Next time I break one, (so far I've only broke one and didn't notice it until cleaning the gun, I replaced the red with green) I'll try a yellow to see if its a good compromise.

See - no consistancy among the people here...

I too would have assumed that green would be better until I got that sight this week. I tried both - red was the way to go.

Like I said, its going to depend on the lighting you generally shoot in as to which you end up preferring, which is why the better models have easy to change inserts.

Its safe to say that any color fiber optic insert is brighter and easier to see than any painted dot or bar. I prefer plain black on the rear sights and usually end up painting any dots or bars on the rear sight black.

THis is confusing. I was hoping the get the overmolded Hivis sights for my M&P. I'm not sure is the pipe is interchangeable but I hope it is in case I guess wrong. Can anyone else suggest a brand?? I thought the Hiviz looked good because the pipe was overmolded to protect it and it would draw in more light than being partially obscured by a metal support.

I noticed that the Hiviz sights in the Midway catalog for Sigs are "Six color fiber optic" and available for front sight only. Part #174-965

I've never used Hiviz or fiber optic sights but like the idea of Hiviz for front sight only.
Has anyone here tried them on a Sig with "bar-dot" sights? I could leave the bar on the rear and put the Hiviz on the front.

Unlike many here, I like bar-dot sights, I just want to make the front sight stand out more.

I put the red HIVIZ shotgun sight #FL2005R ($10 at Wal-Mart) on the front of my P-3AT Kel-Tec. Filed off little thingy that mounts on shotgun barrel and used Permatex The Right Stuff Gasket Maker to apply to P-3. Looks good and works great. :)
