This morning I swung by the local gun shop a few blocks from my apartment and there was a line of about 30-40 people outside the door. I parked and got in line and it didn’t move for around 10 minutes, but I overhead several people leaving the shop saying all ammunition was out of stock.

I sighed and left. :(

The ammo shortage is just beginning, unfortunately. I read that Russia supplied 40-45% of the US ammunition market. This is having TREMENDOUSLY NEGATIVE effects on the entire ammo industry right now, which was already crippled from the covid panic.

I have a CZ-452 bolt action .22 with single shot adapter. It’ll probably be the only gun that sees any range time in the coming months.

Here we go again! have people not run out of money yet?

I dont buy much Russian stuff anymore, but I can see how it will put more supply side pressure on the other importers and domestics.

Whilst I think this is more about punishing "filthy gun owners" than hurting Putin's regime, I dont support supporting it either.

I would, honestly, rather support friendly ( or friendlier, anyway) economies like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the Phillipines.

Worst part of this news was I was getting some steel ammo stocked up to be my rainy day stuff. I wasn't a big steel shooter before but figured have some laying around when brass ammo prices shot up again. Only got a few boxes in the calibers I shoot.

Where roughly was this?

And here I was thinking we were nearing the end of this crap.
Still cautiously optimistic here in Central Texas. Although prices are 15% to 30% higher than pre COVID almost all the calibers I need/shoot/want 9mm, .380 .32 APC 5.56/.223 are usually available. Handgun ammo is mostly Blazer and Federal FMJ with Hornady Critical Defense the exception. Although available for a time in June and July I haven't seen .38 Special, .45 APC and .357 Magnum for the past few weeks but I actively go out looking every two weeks compared to the twice a week a few months ago.

Might want to print this one off for your gun shop talk buddy’s and once they read it have them check the date…

This Russian ammo thing is a scam. Are you telling me people are lining up for crappy steel ammo. I was at the range today and they were as stocked up as I’ve seen in awhile. 9mm Blazer Brass out the wazoo, 38 special, .357, you name it. I live in North Texas.

All I shoot is "crappy steel ammo " out of certain guns of mine. My SKS, which is what I used to fire the most, only eats steel. My buddy only ever shot Monarch out of his AR, and my ex-mother in law only ever carried some Wolf HP. It just happens to be a fact that some people would rather shoot steel than brass.

What Range are you going to

Here’s the inventory at one shop by me. Wall to wall and ammo to go with all of it. 1000 rd cases of 5.56 at $599.00. Don’t know how long it’ll last but there’s no shortage of anything at the moment. Prices are elevated for sure. 76807E7A-8D7C-4E21-979C-FBA0CD503E6F.jpeg DBDF1F6E-4DF1-46C7-A83E-0094FCAEA062.jpeg

There is plenty of QUALITY ammunition in stock nationwide. One source of cheap imported low quality ammo isn't going to start a major panic. They did this before - how short is our memory - where the makers reassigned plants which could export to America and got around it pretty easily.

Expect to see a lot more "Bulgarian" made markings on the same boxes. They will be more careful this time, one actually was still making it just stamping the box differently. They learned their lesson. Change the headstamp, too.

What we fail to see is that most of those buyers were completely happy with the ammo they had - it wasn't even important enough to get their attention UNTIL they heard Russian steel was now banned. This is really a report about hoarding.

Next week we will read around the internet about those who have cases of Russian steel and bemoaning the fact in humble brag threads about how they could sell it for double, but that would be "gouging." This has been going on since 2007 - when Obama was elected. There's been nothing but feast or famine with ammo for the last 14 years. I've still got 750 rounds of PMC 9mm from 2000 but it would be unethical to sell it at todays prices.

I went to the range Friday and they seemed to have a healthy stock of ammo. Of course it was overpriced but at least they had inventory of handgun ammo. I didn't check any rifle ammo but it looked like the shelves were full there too.

I think production is finally keeping up with demand. However; IMHO it's going to take time for ammo prices to drop. There's plenty of new gun owners that only know a shortage and overpriced ammo. I remember seeing 9mm at around $50 per box about six months ago. To those people $20 a box might seem like a bargain. Then there's the issue that the store paid more too. It will take time for the higher price inventory to be replaced by inventory purchased at a lower price.
