How are you carrying your J-Frame?

Since Jan. 17, 2006, I have carried my 642 in a Robert Mika round cut pocket holster. One of the best decisions/purchases I've ever made. If you buy a Mika holster, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent answers and advice here.

My 642s ride in Uncle Mikes or Nemesis front pocket holsters.

I will also occasionally appendix carry, also in an Uncle Mike's.

If I go to OWB carry, I move up to a larger gun.

I use Crimson Trace grips on both of my 642s, very much worth the investment.

I also carry a Bianchi Speed Strip (3+2 rounds, NOT 6 straight, easier to reload 3+2!)

Pocket carry in an Uncle Mike's #3.

Seems like every pocket pistol I've tried eventually landed in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster of the appropriate number. I've bought and tried numerous others costing up to $50-60 each and they all eventually end up in a drawer and the $8-10 Uncle Mike's goes in my pocket.

I pocket carry, and only pocket carry, the airweight J frames. Mika holster. Like others, I have more expensive holsters, but none better than the simple, affordable Mika. Round cut for pants, square cut for coat pockets. For pocket carry, you need only an "envelope" to protect the trigger and to allow an easy draw and to offer reasonable breakup of the outline of the piece in the pocket. You don't need the more expensive. form fitted, boned and highly retentive holster where such design features are more essential in belt carry.

When I can wear a concealing garment, I prefer something much heavier and larger worn on the belt where size and weight becomes less of a consideration.

The J frame is harder for most of us to shoot as well as we might with larger, heavier pieces. The Airweight snubbies certainly have their niche, but, for me, its pocket carry.

I carry my 642 in a Desantis "Tuck This" IWB. Extremely comfortable. For exercise, I have a Belly Band that works great too.

I have two methods of carrying my 642, depending on dress and weather.

I have a Mika pocket holster that I think highly of. It retains the gun well, has a mouth that facilitates quick withdrawal of the gun, and breaks up the outline of the gun well--in other words, it looks like you're carrying a cell phone.

I have a belt holster by Rick Garcia out of Michigan that has served me well also when I choose to belt carry. It keeps the gun high and draw-ready, well concealed, and has kept it's shape well. He also does excellent gun belt work. He actually carries his 442 in the same style of holster.

If you choose to pocket carry, I recommend that you take a look at the type of pants/shorts you are wearing. I find most jeans do not have wide enough pockets to allow a quick draw and you're "stuffing" the gun in there. I find it easiest to pocket carry with Carhartt work pants (or similar) OR dress pants or chinos. Keep that in mind, look at your current wardrobe and what you like to wear.

By the way, if you end up ordering from Mika, odds are high that you'll speak with him directly. He's a hell of a guy to chat with; I ended up on the phone with him for about an hour shooting the breeze. Great guy to do business with, as is Rick Garcia. I've gotten good products from both of them as well as quick response.

Best of luck.

For several years, I used an Alessi ankle rig or Uncle Mike's pocket holster to carry a J-snub, then switched to SP101 snubbies. I have tended to use Kramer pocket holsters and Milt Sparks PMK belt holsters for the SP101 snubbies. I also used other rigs, as far back as 1984, but will not waste bandwidth describing holsters that are out of production.

I kept one S&W Airweight Centennial snub, and am about to start carrying it again, for the first time in about a decade, in a new Raven Concealment Phantom, built with a straight-drop, rather than the usual ten-degree cant. (I need to fire a "qual" with it, first; my employer considers off-the-clock shootings to be line-of-duty, so I have to qualify with each of my guns, that I carry, at least once a year.)

I carried mine in a Desantes Nemisis pocket holster.

Then one day I carried it to theLGS in its box, and traded it for 686+.

Usually, if I carry a J frame, it's a 642 in a regular old Blackhawk pocket holster that I bought at Wal Mart. Light and easy, no real reason not to have it. Except for the whole new job has a no weapons policy thing.

Ordinarily, if I were going to go to the "trouble" to don a belt holster I would carry a bigger gun (Glock 19). That being said, sometimes I just feel like packing a revolver. Then it is IWB 'bout 4:00. TT Gunleather Mike's Special.

As a f'rinstance, It feels wrong to pack an Austrian pistol on the 4th of July, or when we had a mini family reunion at my late grandparents house before it was sold. The old man would have turned over in his grave had I gone into what was his house unarmed.

Who makes a pocket holster for a model 60 snubbie that is sticky on one or both sides and covers the trigger but leaves the stag horn grips easy to grab?

One where you can remove the revolver in an emergency and the holster stays in the pocket?

I strictly pocket carried my 642 for years in either a Mika Round Cut or a Nemesis holster. Several months ago, I picked up a leather OWB pancake holster on a whim. That is the most comfortable way I've ever carried any pistol or wheelgun. That little 642 disappears under a t-shirt and weighs so little that you forget it's along for the ride.

Cheers!
