I know that this thread is going to get locked out soon so I have to throw in my obligatory comparison. Pitbulls are not inherently dangerous to humans, white people are not swindlers, black people are not thieves, Mexican people are not lazy. Shouldn't dogs be judged by the merits of the individual dog and not lumped into a stereotyped group? Be cautious of all people, and all dogs when out and about. ALL of them. At least that way everything is equal.

+1....

Any dog, as we agreed earlier, is a live grenade. Even Karen's little munchkin....

It's mostly training, I think, though, unless the dog has a problem, and I don't think that's breed-specific at all....

It's really back to (I think it was Heinlein's) the idea that you need to have a plan to kill everybody you see.... It's a lot quicker (and safer) to disregard that plan than to have to formulate it when the stuff hits the fan....

The problem with the Pit and some other breeds is that they are capable of causing a LOT of damage if triggered. Sammy could be very dangerous to about anybody, but if you ignore his rather large head & jaws, looks harmless. Karen's little one looks to be totally harmless, but you really can't tell. The difference being that a Pit, or even Sammy, could be fatal to about anything his own size, and probably even larger - all the way to a human! I'm not sure that little fuzzball would quite make that cut :), but IAC, they all need to be respected.

So, it goes both ways.... The owners, in keeping the dogs "trained" (and happy, and restrained) to NOT attack without orders, and the rest of us to be careful with any encounter.

And, back to topic, if the dog is attacking your dog, it gets a little fuzzy legally - certainly could land you in civil court. If the dog's attacking you or your family, though, the decision is obvious.... We are, I think, obligated to attempt an alternate method of stopping the aggression if the means are available, but it's not necessarily a "you can just leave" situation....

Indeed this is a tricky area. IIRC in Michigan dogs are considered property. You would be in effect destroying someone's property to keep it from damaging or destroying your own property. Before we put up a fence my pitbull was sunning himself on a steel cable lead. The neighbors German Shepherd got loose and attacked my dog. Being a natural born killer he didn't fight back as the other dog straddled him and bit away at his head and neck. I did not consider the law when I launched out the back door with a golf club to protect my "property", Each state and circumstance is different.

Roscoe is most dangerous when he uses his Jedi mind control to get what he wants.

I can't legally shoot him for that, can I?

Sorry, gotta go - for some reason I need a pound of bacon, need a pound of bacon... :D

DB:

Sammy does the same thing.... And, no, you can't shoot him....

He lost his doggie door priveleges about a year ago, due to too much barking n the back yard. Then, in late August, he demanded to go outside too early in the AM for me, and I missed a step. I like using a cane now.... :(
