Ruger MK II -.22lr ($250) I have had the one my dad went halves with me on for 27 yrs. I would get a Marlin mod 60 ($150)for a matching combo to bring us up to the $400 mark Then use the remaining $600 on a really good shotgun or CMP Garand.

Used Glock 17 - $400
Walmart special Savage 10 .243 with cheap Bushnell scope - $375
That leaves $225 for belt, holster, sling, and cleaning supplies, but don't forget to factor in ammo and a better scope and rings down the line.

M1 Garand, service grade - $595 from CMP

Glock 20, 10mm, "blue label", at LEO Price - $420.

They'd work, on that budget.

Here is my take...

My choice would be a Stainless Steel Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel. Durable, relaible, and flexible.

To keep the price tag under $1000, my choice for a rifle would actually be a shot gun. Shot guns are about a versatile of a gun as you can ask for. Under $400, I would go with a Remington 870 or an 887. Durable, reliable, and flexible.

1000 budget? A little tough...

Keep it simple and reliable i suppose...

1911 .45
Ak-47

These two will keep you under 1,000 and extremely reliable.

M1 Garand with McCann gas nuts ~$650 total with rifle from CMP and nuts from Brownells
S&W Model 10 or 64 ~$290 shipped and with ffl transfer from J&G Sales in AZ

.357 Magnum Revolver with a 4" barrel (probably the Taurus Tracker I currently own) and a Marlin 1894C .357 Magnum levergun. Although I never expect a true SHTF situation, having the same ammo requirements for both guns would be an advantage.

either way would cost you about the same (or roughly). depends if you like revolver versus auto.

Ruger GP100 (gently used) and Howa 1500 .223 or .308

S&W 4516 .45 auto, and Howa 1500 (either caliber)

+1 35Rem . . . but I would suggest Marlin 336 in .30-30 and a S&W Model 66. . . I've got many more and generally carry a P239 Sig, but for all around utility/hunting/shooting you are hard pressed to beat a .38 revolver and a 30-30 rifle.

-edit- Duh, forgot about the $1000 budget thing.

My SIG P6 and Gew 98 fit the sub-$500 mark quite well. I'd probably look at a Mini 14 or WASR-10 to go along with the P6 in terms of assault rifles.

yeah about 60% of the posts are wwwwwaaaayyyyy over 1000 bucks for a pair of guns more often than not it wouldnt even take care of one of the guns. dont know what he is into but id pick a glock 19 or 23 and a ak variant (5.45 would be good as he could practice with it more often or 7.62x39 variants for those who want the POOOWWWEEERRR).

... on a $1000 budget ...
My choice would be one of two combos:

* my Marlin 336 in .30-30 plus a .22 revolver with a 4" to 8" barrel

* my Marlin 39 in .22 plus a revolver in either .357 mag or .44 mag (larger caliber more desirable as one moves west and north)

My reasoning. The smaller caliber takes small game for food. The larger one takes medium game and serves for home or camp defense.

Only one long gun to transport on foot, with the other carried in pack or holster.

scoped Saiga in .308 w folding stock.
HK P7M8 9x19

less militaristic:

Sporterized K98
K frame .357 S&W

My Glock 21 which I paid around $485 for, then it'd have to be my SLR-95 which I paid $389 for back in 2000. Now it'd be much more expensive. But this'd be under the $1,000 mark.
If I had to buy new today for under $1,000, it'd still be a Glock 21, but for a rifle I'd look hard at a Remington 7600 carbine in .30-06 which run around $550, it'd be close to the $1,000 mark if not slightly over. A runner up for the pistol would be a Glock 23 and the rifle would be an SKS.
