M16/AR-15 better than AK-47/Galil

Not another one of these threads

This has been covered thousands of times. Can't we all just agree to disagree? Welcome to THR.

And in other breaking news.....

The Excalibur Model 1 has just beat out the Albion A2 in extensive testing by the Sherwood Guerrilla brigades.

For my money, Albion is STILL the better Magic Sword (tm) though. :p

Pretty interesting. It didn't sound like they didn't like the AK47 but rather the Galil, however, both were considered inferior to the AR15. I would agree. The issues of jamming were back in the early sixties and almost totally alleviated by the change to high quality powder from the remanufactured dreck the government stuck the poor GIs with at first.

Also, the Glock IMHO is probably the finest handgun to come out of the late 20th century so the remarks about the Jericho seem reasonable, too.

Sounds like the Israelis got a large bias toward purchasing its own country's products, just like most places.

Kaylee, could it be...

that we have discovered another disciple of the One True Sword?:scrutiny:

All weapons are dangerous. It is the individual soldier that makes the difference.

No one who hasn't survived real combat should make any claims.

I always get a kick out of these threads. I love the M-16, but I don't worship it like some do. Here are some cute quotes from the "proof" you provided:
It's lighter, more accurate, more versatile, and with proper maintenance it is very reliable.
Hehehe, so you're saying that it's less reliable and requires at least daily maintenance to remain reliable.
As for reliability, the M16 is reliable enough.
I'm litterally slapping my knees and laughing out loud. Oh yeah, 'reliable enough.' Well, reliable enough means that they have learned to live with its unreliability. This reminds me of how the M-14 won out over the FAL rifle. Let's redo the tests and rewrite the requirements so that our gun wins.

In reality, they like the gun because of its positive attributes. They list its light weight first. Yeah, it's very light, very compact, easy to mount optics on, and it's the most accurate rifle available to the IDF. These are all hallmarks of the Armalite design. Another distinguishing characteristic is its built-in reliance on proper and constant maintenance. I can guarantee that if a weapon just as light, just as accurate, and just as versatile were introduced that didn't have the reliability problem, they'd be touting reliability as a requirement.

I can think of some analogies: "Well, she cooks often enough." "My car may not be reliable, but it's paid for!"

WRONG, that´s the official web page of the Isayeret, the Israeli
special forces- have you never heard of them?

The truth is that the M16 is by far the more superior weapon. It's lighter, more accurate, more versatile, and with proper maintenance it is very reliable. Indeed, it might be less sand proof then the Galil/AK47 series. However, all you need is to clean it once a day and it will work like a charm.

Hope your campaigns don't last longer then a day then  :neener:

"Reliable Enough" is what people say about Microsoft. Just like Microsoft, you'll need to reboot your M16 once a day to keep it working..

As a BSD user, I'm use to uptimes of 7 years... Kind of like an AK47...

How about this:

list your priorities in a "military weapon". I'll bet "reliability" is on the top of that list..

Now get an AK, get an M16. Start shooting until one of them jams. Which would you bet your money on? I've got my money on the AK. If you do too, then obviously the superiority of the M16 is nullified.

Being as the Israelis are the only people in the entire Middle East and North Africa that know how to use firearms effectively and have the cojones to use them effectively, any weapon they use is going to produce impressive kill ratios. Palestinians can only shoot civilians and then only hit them from a distance of ten feet. I guess they're more effective rock throwers. No one but Israel is any army worth being called an army in that part of the world. That doesn't necessarily mean the M-16 is better. It just means that most Palestinians are idiots who get themselves easily shot. You could award the whole Palestinian Authority a Darwin Award for throwing rocks at people holding loaded rifles.

That said, I repaired the M-16A1 in the army as a 45B. I own an AK and I don't own an AR-15.

Weapons cleaning has been standard military doctrine as long as I know. We had to clean weapons before we ate, slept, or flaked out. What kinda army objects to taking care of their weapons. Oh, yeah, comrades.
