I just got my Polytech M14-s back from the gunsmith, he checked the head space and test fired it. He says its all good and safe to fire.

So much for $125 on a GI bolt!! Woo!

Can't wait to get it on the line!

How is the Polytech M14s treating you? I hear that the new ones are built to USGI specs.

My CMP M-14 parts kit came yesterday. I put it together this afternoon with the new Fulton Armory NM barrel, bolt, and receiver, and am getting ready to go test fire it for functionality. The stock is unmarked walnut, and needs refinishing, but that can wait. Some of the parts are Winchester, including the rear sight, trigger housing, and op rod. The hammer and safety are marked SA, and I don't see any marks at all on the flash hider or gas cylinder.
The only thing tricky about putting it together was assembling the bolt without a bolt tool. I used an empty .30-06 shell in the chamber, put the bolt in the receiver, and pressed down on the back of the bolt to compress the ejector spring, then tapped the extractor in place with a plastic mallet. It ejects empty cases smartly now.

Burner, I was considering doing the same thing....after the parts kit, what is your absolute total costs for everything? Oh and pics would be great!

Total costs for the parts were $600 for the CMP Grade "A" parts kit, $899 for the Fulton Armory receiver, National Match grade military contour barrel, and Fulton bolt (includes intalling and headspacing barrel to bolt), $30 for a USGI chromed firing pin. So, total parts came to $1529. Shipping charges for the kit came to $22.95, for the barreled receiver and firing pin, $45.00, and local FFL charge for accepting delivery NICS, and state and local taxes was $52. Grand total, $1648.95, and about 2 hours labor putting everything together.
I function tested it with 20 rounds of Wolf 150gr.FMJ, and 20 rounds of German DAG NATO surplus, and everything functioned fine. After I refinish the stock, I'm going to see about glass bedding it, and I need to bring an Allen wrench to adjust the front sight the next time I shoot it, it's grouping about 2" to the right at 50 yards with the rear sight centered.

Or you could just make 4 clicks to the right on your rear sight. I understand the desire for perfection though! ;)

Sounds like you came out pretty good with that kit. You have barely more in it than you would pay for a rifle from SAI, but yours is a forged mil spec receiver and bolt, a better barrel, and all GI internals.

I am also thinking about a build with a CMP kit. I'll probably go with a 7.62mm Arms bolt and receiver though.

Here's what the kit looks like assembled into a fully functional rifle, before any refinishing of the old GI stock.:

I picked up a handful of GI surplus magazines from CTD to go with it. They're made by Westinghouse, and are in sale right now for $9.97. This one worked fine during test firing.

The gas cylinder is shiny stainless steel, with all the original finish gone, but the flash hider is still looking good.

Mount attachment for a Harris bi-pod info needed.

I own an M1A that appears to be identical to the one show in the photo posted by Skipbo32 (holding it while standing in front of red metal roof) but I am unable to find a satisfactory way to attach the mount assembly to the forend. Any ideas or experience with this?

Sappnasty: The picture of your wife shooting the M1A brought back memories. My buddy and I used to shoot at that range in Daytona. He's passed away since, but we enjoyed shooting there.

It was a very "interesting" place to shoot. The benches are all attached to the front roof supports, so if someone is shooting a heavy-kicking gun at one end, it shakes the whole thing!!! That's a very poor design, but it's the people and guns that we saw there that made it interesting.

Thanks!

This thread came along at the right time. I just won an auction on GB for the m1A Scout today. After my LGS could not deliver I bit the bullet and did the online thing. Turns out I am saving almost $100 even after shipping and transfer fee. So I have ammo money right off the bat! Will post pics next week (i hope!) Waiting is going to suck!

Fulton Armory is using a forged receiver now?

No, the Fultons and Springfield Armory, Inc. receivers are cast, then CNC machined and heat treated. LRB and 7.62 Firearms and Norinco/Polytech receivers are forged.

National Match:
SDC10195.gif Will shoot five shots into 1.25" at 100 M.

My other one is a standard rifle with Fulton Armory USGI countour walnut stock and metal. It shoots about a 2.75 inch group at 200 M. Although it was standard synthetic it came with a NM front post. And the factory two stage trigger is fine. And there is a few sneaky toes in this pic too

Interesting.

According to thier website, 762MM Firearms is building both. (Forged and cast)

From what I can tell, James River Armory is using these same receivers for their builds as well.

I thought that someone mentioned that they(Fulton) were using a forged receiver now? Must have mis read the post. My girl's Fulton is cast.

Fulton Armory notes that their bolts and op rods are forged, and that other parts "Meets All USGI Material, Heat Treat & Geometry Specifications". There've been some questions raised on another Forum about the heat treating of their bolts by users who claimed their FA bolts were considerably softer than military specs call for, to the extent of testing a FA bolt against a GI TRW bolt. The bolt tested was indeed less hard than the TRW, but Clint at Fulton Armory said it was as hard as it's required to be. I've got a Fulton receiver and bolt, and so far they both seem to be holding up fine, for the couple of hundred rounds I've put through them. Time will tell how well they hold up.
