I just picked up 250 rounds of Magtech 9mm +P+ 115 JHP ammo. Today I went to the range with two pistols (S&W 910 and SIG P226), a chronograph and 100 rounds of the magtech ammo. I ran a box of ammo through each gun with zero hiccups. The Magtech ammo averaged 1310fps out of the SIGs 4.4" barrel and 1296 from the S&W's 4" tube. The recoil was more than your generic range ammo but still very managable (similar to a .40 S&W). I was VERY happy with the accuracy of this stuff. I shot at ranges from 12 to 25 yards. At 12 yards there was literally one ragged hole in the center of a 5.5" target with both guns. As one would expect, group sizes opened up a bit, but still COM hits were easy and plentiful on a silhouette target.

All in all I'm happy with this stuff for $21/50 rounds. Hopefully sometime down the road I will get a chance to try this stuff on some wet phone books (or left over pumpkins!!!) and see how the JHP expands.

Good report, keep us updated on any expansion tests you do. This type of information is always appreciated so thanks for the time spent.

How about 9mm Magtech 93gr. First Defense Solid Copper HP Ammo? Is this too light of a bullet that it will over penetrate? the fps is 1,330 with 364 lbs. of energy.

From a personal standpoint, 93gr in a 9mm seems awfully light. Heck I prefer 100gr bullets in .380! I live in an area where heavy winter clothing is the norm ~1/2 the year so 9 times out of 10 I will opt for bullets that are on the heavy end of the caliber spectrum, thus hopefully maximizing penetration.

For me it boils down to, does your pistol shoot a particular type/weight of bullet accurately, is said ammo reliable, can you afford to practice with it regularly? If I cant answer yes to each one of these...then it isn't for me! YMMV

good write-up collector. I've shot magtech .357Mag with great results but no 9mm. I have bought magtech cases and slugs to load .380acp and good quality. also 9mm fmj 115gr slugs I have'nt loaded yet (no primers) but apparently good quality again at a very reasonable price.

Living in Arizona I thought that the light weight might stop the bullet from over penetration and keep it in the perp instead of the neighbor next door. I was told the heavier slug can over penetrate for example a 158 gr .357 hollow point will whiz through someone without expansion...would this hold for the heavier 9mm hollow points?

Isn't +P+ a little hot for Sigs?

The 158 will probably expand, but will likely penetrate further than the 125's. In general that holds true for all calibers, but it also depends on bullet design. The all copper bullets can't be compared directly to lead cored bullets. You really need proper testing in ballistics gel.

I have a wolff 18lb recoil springs in both pistols currently and I don't intend to shoot a huge amount of this ammo (maybe a box every other month). Fiocchi's 115gr FMJ clocks in at ~1250fps and is a pretty decent range analog.
