Moving to New Jersey

In NJ they also require a DL and write down the # for every box of ammo you buy

Last year I interviewed with a company for a position in NJ. As part of the preparation, learned that about 2/3rds of the stuff in my safe was not allowed. I also discovered a 2 hour commute from PA was suddenly very acceptable and the cost of housing would be lower.

Fortunately, during the course of the interview they offered me two other openings for the same position in two different states at the same salary... I could have my pick of New Jersey, Tennessee or Alabama... One of the few times the phrase "in a heart beat" actually applied...

BigBadJohn:

You are incorrect. The "substantially similiar" language was struck down for being unconstitutionally vague, one of the very few judicial rulings in NJ that benefited gun owners. Here's the AG's letter on the topic: http://www.state.nj.us/lps/dcj/agguide/assltf.htm

This explains why you can find a ton of post ban Bushmaster XM-15s in NJ gun shops.

BTW, as other posters have pointed out, PHL itself is culturally part of NJ. In addition to a 4% wage tax, assessed whether you live or work in PHL, there's a bunch of other hidden fees. Years ago, when we were looking into houses on both sides of the PHL city limits, we found that various fees and taxes added up to what was basically a $12k /year "up yours fee" for being so silly as to be a job holding property owner inside PHL city limits. Being a *business* owning property holder is an even more insane proposition....

No need to be a wise ass.

Try getting a sense of humor.I'll do wonders for your disposition.Re-read your post.
It was wide open to satiric interpretation.Sorry if your feelings were injured. And you appear to be 3000 miles from Jersey now, which should help a whole lot.

Pete's OP:
Try Sal + Joe's Pizza and Gaetano's when you get the chance. Jersey is a great place to live, except for the gun laws, property taxes, and state government.

Same suggestion here ....

When you are young you get a job offer and you take what at the time seems like an extraordinary amount of money. But we all find out the hard way that very few trade-offs are worth it in the end. You are trading off something you want in order to get that money. This is what we all do - sell off our souls one piece at a time and way down the road a person wishes they would have stoood by principle a bit more, would have done a few things differently.

Surely - this is one of those things you will later wish you had done differently. Spend some more time getting your resume into other hands, give recruiters more time, say 'no' to PRNJ.

My .02.

geekWithA.45,
Thanks for the info , the code should updated to reflect the changes.

Unfortunately, simply reading the statutes is not, and has never been, sufficient to determine what the state of the law actually is, because it is impacted by the statutes, the regulations (which implement the statutes) and case law, which modifies both in practice.

This single fact keeps lawyers well fed.

As an engineer, I expected the law to be a specification: a complete, rational, and orderly description of a given state. After hanging out with lawyers, I have learned that this is not so. The law is a mystery, to be devined, like the entrails of a dove.

Thanks geek.

Yeah, I was introduced to the whole 'letter of the law' deal with Maryland's traveling statue. I will be looking more into habitation in the areas outside Philly, if I can find something less expensive.

Tyril, rather than add to the overwhelming amount of information above screaming "Stay away!!" as a NJ refugee let me refer you to a couple of other threads in which I've addressed questions similar to yours:

http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=323529 (see post #24)
http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=338071 (see post #8)

As an engineer, I'm sure you'll appreciate the need to avail yourself of all possible information before calmly and rationally evaluating all relevant facts and making a decision. I'll resist the urge to tell you what to do,

but -

aw, hell....

my God man, what are you thinking!!! If you value your money, your freedom, your sanity - Stay away!!!

The only thing that Jersey offers is ... gasoline prices to die for.
Sorry, not any more. His Imperial Lordship Corzine just proposed more than doubling the gas tax, making it - by far - the highest in the country. That on top of quadrupling tolls. That on top of already having increased sales taxes.

Need I mention:

The nation's highest property tax
The nation's highest cigarette tax
The nation's worst business tax climate
Three of the top fifteen cities with the highest murder rate - and they just eliminated the death penalty!
Finally, by overwhelming THR member vote, (drum roll please) the nation's worst gun laws.

@Qwert64,

No there is non such DL and serial number requirement and if they ask for it, do as I have, you tell them so and take your trade away.

In general in NJ

The FID and pistol permit can take anything from 30 days to 6 months entirely dependant upon your local cop shop. Call regularly and politely once a week after the official 30 days are up and it will be processed quicker if only to stop you irritating them.....

When asked, and you will, what you want to do with firearms do NOT EVER say home defense or such like. Target, hunting, sport etc will be a far better idea.

Hollow Point ammo issue has been mentioned before, if you are concerned and want a better stopper for home defense, I suggest EFMJ.

AR-15's that are NOT Colt are OK, if you really want to confuse them do what I did and buy a Robinson Arms XCR, looks superficially like an AR-15 EBR but with a piston system, AK style ejector etc......I've had fun with that I admit...

NO FOLDING OR COLLAPSABLE stocks, 'cause as we know they make any rifle infinitely more evil.

You can have almost any weapon or a close facsimile therof, it's just a PITA.

However, by being a PITA, you will at least in some small way be contributing to the good fight in NJ.

Send me a pm for real estate and living conditions in the Moorestown area. Ask me any questions and I will answer. Your getting alot of noise here in this thread, I will try to clarify or assist in anyway.

Personally, the gun rules suck, the taxes suck and I will leave this state. BUT... the schools here are fantastic for my boys, my family is here, the beach is here, business does get done in NJ and the crime outside Newark, Trenton and Camden is low.

Geekwitha45 has always had good insights on NJ, I beleive he is an escapee. Sometimes there is more to life then having to deal with a crappy gun law.

;)

I think, in a previous life, I pissed off some gods, or ate some babies, or something, and they punished me by making me THR's resident expert on Jersey.

Being an engineer, you should come on up here. There is a need for people in your line of work, and the pay in the energy industry rivals defense any day.

We do have a lot of gun laws though:

Can't carry concealed without your shall-issue permit.
Can't buy machine guns without your federal tax stamp.
Can't fire your gun in town.
Can't shoot people or others' property.
Can't buy a gun from a dealer without a 5-minute phone call to NICS.
Can't....... Well, that about covers it. :)

Seriously, I just moved back to Wyoming from CA, and I couldn't get out of that hellhole fast enough. All this former CA POW can say is don't do it.... Jersey is no better. There are plenty of other places that have great opportunities... this is one of them.

Mechanical Engineer
Come to Wichita Kansas all of the major aircraft players are here
and they have adds running constantly. I work for a large Ag
manufacturer in the same area. I was in a similar situation when
I got out of school and I had to say no to some good jobs
that would have put in cities that hate my hobby.
I wish you the best of luck in your new job. Get some experience and
keep looking for a job in a place you will be comfortable.

One more thing to know about guns & New Jersey - you can FORGET about getting a C & R FFL in NJ - state law says guns can only be sent to firearm dealers with STATE and FEDERAL licenses.

Well, no noise here, I grew up two towns away and escaped as soon as it was possible. I have a lot of nostalgia for the impossibly flat and sandy, scrub pine-covered (where it isn't a strip mall) land of my misguided yout', but no urge whatsoever to ever live in a police state.
