MY Extractor Broke on me today at the Range (1911).

Just wanted to let everyone know that today at the range my stock extractor in my SA MC Operator 1911 broke today. I fired 450rds through it today It was at the 3500rds mark total rounds fired to date when it broke. I am debating weather to worry with sending it all the way back to sa for that or just order the piece and do it myself, then call them and get them to send me one as well, then i will have a spare which i need anyway.

I'd get an Ed Brown Hardcore and be done with it. I would not spend the time/money shipping it back to Springfield - the stock Springer extractor isn't worth it.

The get 2 Ed Browns Springfields extractors aren't worth cost of shipping.

Extractors are easy to replace on a 1911. Just use a screwdriver to gently pry them out of their channel once you've removed the firing pin back. Just order the parts and be done with it. You'll have your pistol up and running again in 5 minutes or so (although if you want to do a thorough cleaning on the gun, that'd be the time to do it when you have it all apart). Remember to put some lubricant in the extractor channel to aid in reinsertion.

I'd call SA and tell them what happened, they'll want the broken part and then they'll send you a replacement...I did the same for a friend of mine with a SA Champion that had a mis shaped hook on his extractor. At the same time, if this pistol is used for defensive purposes, I'd order a Cylinder and Slide extractor made of spring steel from them or MidwayUSA, tune it and install and you should be good for a very long time and you'll have the replacement SA extractor as an extra. As was said, detail clean the slide and extractor channel but use very little lube as it will attract firing residue, which if it accumulates enough to block the flexing of the extractor, could very well contribute to malfunctions and possibly a broken extractor.

I remember reading that SA had a time with bad extractors in the past in that they would loose tension easily.....as a matter of curiosity, what kind of magazines were you using? In particular, did they have the dimpled follower? Any trouble with failures to feed or to go to battery before the break? Was the firing pin channel full of crud? Inquiring minds want to know!

thanks to everyone you guys are right i am gonna order the part for myself the Ed Brown, as well i will call sa too to get them to send me another, and maybe a mag or 2!

Is there any fitting required for the ED Brown extractor that i need to do?

The gun has already been cleaned through and through, in prep for the new part, and T&E after the new extractor is installed.

My SA loaded had the extractor hook break off right out of the box a few years ago. I ended up sending it in. SA paid freight both ways and put in a new extractor. After looking at shipping costs, even though SA paid them, I will not do that again. I have developed a good relationship with a local smith. Everything I can't do he does for way less than shipping.

I would use the company for a major warranty issue like a cracked frame or slide.
