Nothing is more fun than a .22 especially if you don't already have one. A calico pistol is on the high end of your price range.

Holy smokes, for some reason I was thinking I read that you had an M1. I'll amend my suggestion to that.

They are great fun, and great guns can be had from the CMP for less than $700 now.

1) .22LR rifle:

Lots of fun plinking away with a Ruger 10/22 semi-auto, Browning BL-22 lever action, or an older Remington Model 572 pump action.

2) AR-15:

Basic no-frills AR's are available for around $650. Inexpensive ammo, hi-cap mags, and tons of accessories can make for a lot of enjoyable shooting.

3) Single Action revolver:

When you want a break from semi-autos, there's just something about playing around with a Colt SAA (or appropiate clone), in .45LC that will just put a smile on your face.

Where is your shotgun?
Exactly, where is your shotgun? I'd go with a nice older Remington Wingmaster or a Beretta 3901. Both can be had with money to spare from your $700. Go buy some ammo and some clays. Nothings more fun than dusting a clay or a quick flying little dove. Everyone has to have a shotgun. Hell, for 700 get the Wingmaster and the 10/22. Now your well on your way to the classic american gun safe.

Get a percussion revolver, a totally different shooting experience. Gets you into history in a fun way. Blackpowder guns are simpler technology, but the smoke and boom are worth it. I prefer Uberti 1851s, but you should also heft a repro 1860 and a repro Remington 1858 before buying because each feels different in your hand. The ultimate in cheapfun!
