Hi, guys:

My Agency has given me the task on recommending our new duty pistol for our agents. Basically it can be any pistol but it has to be in 9mm. At this time we have use the S&W 5904, 915, 910, 10, 36, 2213; Walther PPK; Sig-Sauer 228; Glock 17, 18 and Browning HP. We are trying to reduce our inventory to one type pistol.

I narrowed our choices to Glock 17, Sig Sauer 226 (since I have a lot of experience with them) and the Walther P99QA. I will appreciate your comments on this matter.

The reason we are retiring the Browning HP is because those pistols are ove 40 years old. I concur, this is one of the best pistol ever made. The Walther P99 QA just became available in Republic of Panama, so the brass want it to give it a try on this trials.

Out of those choices, the Sig, hands down.

Why you would rid yourself of one of the best LE 9mm's ever made, the BHP, I don't quite get. Especially to the likes of a Glock and Walther?

That Sig 226 though, great choice!

Tied for first: SIG/Walther. 107th Glock

The Walther is probably a better choice department wide because it is cheaper. The P99 is totally reliable and has superior ergonomics. The Glock is Iraqi army stuff.

Get the Walther!!
All are fine guns, but the Walther has one advantage!! The user replaceable multi sized back straps mean that the grip can be semi customized for each officer's hand. They are included with each Walther pistol and come in small, medium, and large sizes. I give this advice because I have smallish hands and the Glock does not fit comfortably. With the smallest size back strap, the pistol fits quite nicely!!! When you are carrying around a gun that may be called upon to save you, then it had better fit and be comfortable!! Ergonomics is probably the factor never taken into consideration in these kinds of decisions!!

My vote would be Sig 226 (or 228). I've always lamented the lack of a visible hammer on striker-fired pistols. With Sigs, in a stress situation, you've got the visual confirmation that the thing's either cocked or not before reholstering, something that you won't have with the Walther (and can't have with the Glock). I'm a bit of a traditionalist, and the Walther and Glock triggers are somewhat non-standard, which could lead to problems, especially if not practiced with rigorously.

All three are incredibly accurate and dependable, but like most people who have used them, I lean toward the Sig because it just feels more natural.

Have you heard of CZs down there? They would be far cheaper and do the same job. i.e. shoot like a house on fire:)

I voted sig, but I hesitate on the 226 part. Its an awfully big gun. A 229 would be my choice in those. As long as you have 9s, carry a more compact, slicker gun.

Also, I would look into the DAO model. Fewer controls to worry about/train on, and the first shot is the same as all the others. None of that DA/SA transition.

Being in a human-factors related group now, I also say "test!" Get it down to 2-3 /exact/ choices, and then run a small selection of people thru all three guns. Vary which gun is shot first, make them shoot with lights, draw and so on. Then look at the figures. One should will emerge, and if not just base it on cost or something else instead.

Incidentally, valid user studies with specific goals like this can be done with /very/ small numbers. 6-8 people would definately be enough.

hk usp compact or p2000

I would add that the hk usp, usp compact or the p2000 would all be great choices in 9mm.

I have the uspf .45 and could not he happier. The usp 9f is very big, but the compact and p2000 are nicely sized. the p2000 will allow for different sized hands with back strap inserts.

if you are on a budget, the sw-99 in 9mm would also be a good choice as you can get them in full size for uniform and compact for plain-clothes officers.

There are a lot of great 9mm duty pistols out there. get a good one and train, train, train.

P226 no doubt.

No external safeties yet a traditional double action with a rather heavy first pull and a real hammer is the way to go for the safest pistol with the simplest manual of arms.

Glocks leave too little margin for error.

P99 is a great pistol and will fit more hands but were I to be equipping a force of people I would stick with something with years positive feedback which brings me back to the P226.

SIGs as a rule are the most reliable pistols I have ever used and that includes Glocks.

Just my two cents. All are great firearms.

Among the three alternatives -- and without any questions or doubts -- the Sig P226!
