G.A.T. Guns in East Dundee (route 25, about a mile north of 90) has a full-time gunsmith. I don't know how good their gunsmith services are, but the rest of their operation is top notch.
Wow, scratch that place. I just called there and talked to the gunsmith about getting the base mounted. Very odd conversation, to say the least.
The gunsmith asked me why I can't use the 3/8" dovetail which came on my Marlin 917 rifle. I told him that I have picatinny rings for use with a 35mm main tube scope, and a picatinny base for those rings. He said, "you must mean 30mm". I told him that no, my scope indeed has a 35mm main tube, and came with rings. "You got an oddball then" he says, and replies, "Well, we're not set up to do that". (At this point I have no idea why anything else is relevant to mounting my base.)
"I don't quite understand you sir, aren't you setup to drill and tap 4 base holes for any rifle?" I say.
"Well it will be $30 a hole", sounding all pissed off, he replies! It was like he just did not want me there for unknown reasons.
I have no idea what's up that guys you know what, but that's pretty weird. First he tells me he cannot do it, then says the price. I said thank you and goodbye.
