Nylon bullets

Anybody seen or used the Herter's TNJ (Total Nylon Jacket) ammo? They have nonreloadable aluminum cases and lead bullets coated in nylon. What do you think about these? Something in me doesn't trust them.

Nyclad's worked pretty darn good in .38's for years and years.

Are these supposed to be cheap plinkers?

Well, they are plinkers but they ain't cheap. $12/50 before shipping is more than I pay now for reloadable brass case FMJs.

I guess I get the point, cheap lead bullets that shouldn't lead up your barrel when you shoot a bunch of them... Buuuut they don't seem to be much cheaper (at least from the Cabelas site linked) than the cheapo WallyWorld FMJ I buy, so I see no advantage.

I have shoot about 8 boxes of them and have a few more in a draw. They shoot well, not especially hot but very accurate. Based on what I have been able to gather they are designed to be low heavy metal exposure for inside range use. Cabelas also have recently started having "extra clean" ammo at high end prices. I suspect that in some areas that there is pressure to use only this type of ammo. Win-Clean ammo has been around for awhile, never appealed to me but it has a following.
If the EPA continues to be as powerful as it is under the current administration, we may all be forced into using something different.

I purchased most of the TNJ boxes during sales for under $10 per box. I would recommend that you try a few boxes for the experience/education factor.

A friend does reload these with success. Of course, using available components.

I was thinking the same thing about the cost. How do they act downrange? Do the bullets stay intact or do they deform?
My dad has a PPK that doesn't like anything but Win Clean. I wonder if these would work well for him.

the federal Nyclad bullets are the same thing, lead bullet with a lead coating. you get a lead bullet without the problems of lead fouling in the bore. they work, but I have seen jacketed bullets work better and just as easy to clean vs lead. Not a new technology by any means, but it is proven to work.
