Police: Firefighter Shoots 3 Would-Be Robbers, Kills 1

PHILADELPHIA -- A shootout in Philadelphia's Nicetown-Tioga section left one man dead, and two others hospitalized.

Police said a firefighter shot at a group of suspected robbers in self-defense at his home on the 2800 block of North 18th Street.

It happened late Thursday night, but many police officers and homicide detectives were still on the scene in North Philadelphia investigating and collecting evidence Friday morning.

Neighbors told NBC 10 and police confirm that the home was targeted by robbers before. This time, the homeowner was ready for the robbers as he turned the tables on them.

"We were sitting on our steps, heard about 8 to 10 rounds," neighbor Theresa Wiggins-Seals said.

Police said what Wiggins-Seals heard around 11:50 p.m. was a bungled home invasion.

"They have been breaking in his house. This is the fourth time they broke in his house. He was upstairs at the time they broke in his house," Wiggins-Seals said.

Authorities said the homeowner, who is a Philadelphia firefighter, was at home when he heard noises.

He came downstairs, officials said, to find four robbers in his home. Police said they shot at the homeowner and missed. The homeowner shot three of them.

Neighbors said the homeowner is a good person who always helps his neighbors.

"This is a man who always helps anybody, a loving good neighbor does anything somebody asks him to do," Wiggins-Seals said.

One alleged robber was killed and two others were injured. The extent of the other two alleged robbers' injuries is unclear. They were hospitalized.

The fourth alleged robber ran away.

Awesome. A good shoot, after [argh] being shot at first [and missing thankfully]. Hopefully the other hoodlums were armed and it's even MORE open and shut..

That's a right neighborly neighbor there! Quick to mention that his house had been broken into before, and that the homeowner is a good guy :)

"8-10 rounds"... does Philly have a magazine capacity cap like in all of California? Interesting that she said "rounds" rather than "shots"... possibly another shooter?

Hope the two hoodlums in the hospital were injured critically :fire: Deserved what they got. Good shooting by the fireman... makes me wonder how I would react after being shot at! :what:

Be careful!! You might be jumping to conclusions here!!

One alleged robber was killed and two others were injured. The extent of the other two alleged robbers' injuries is unclear. They were hospitalized.

The fourth alleged robber ran away

After all they are only alleged

They might have been boy scouts trying to sell cookies :scrutiny:

No magazine capacity limits in PA. Also, PA has a state preemption law, so although the libs in Philly would like to have more repressive gun control laws than the rest of the state, we have their hands tied.

It only says they were alleged robbers. If they were there for the sole purpose of murdering this guy and his family, rather than stealing his stuff, they weren't "robbers." :neener:

You have a valid point. At least one of them isn't an alleged anything any more.

Your assuming he used some kind of full size 9mm. Could have been anything and that could have been its full capacity.

I'm glad the the firefighter allegedly put some alleged holes in the alleged robbers. This may have an effect on their alleged choice of occupation.

You're also assuming that the fireman was the only one doing the shooting. All four of them could have been blasting away at once. That would only be two rounds apiece for the "8-10" rounds.

Course we know the fireman shot at least three times by himself and at least one of the BG's shot back once.

Firefighters shooting bad guys.

Next thing you know, we're gonig to have cops pissing on fires and medics eating doughnuts! Chaos I tell ya...

Interestingly, around here at least, firefighters are generally more 'gun folk' than the cops are.

tommy,

as a vollie EMT and FF, i visit dunkin donuts more often then ANY cop i know...although usually it's just for coffee :)

To keep this on topic, good to hear :)
