I live in Alabama and sometimes some will ask or say to me "you got your guns registered" or "better have em registered"...I have a pistol permit and my understanding there is no such thing as registering a gun in my state because i buy guns and never am told to register it by the dealers however i think some states make you register your guns...can anyone explain this registering to me and am i correct that in Alabama there is no such thing, also if some states make you register guns how does it work?only handguns?

No registering in Alabama.
I think California has it.... New York City too.
Maybe some other localities.
This is a common idea that pops up on TV shows ---- especially these "CSI" shows. They get a suspect's gun and it's "registered" to someone who may or may not be the evildoer. On TV it's simply a plot device, as most TV writers have no clue about how things work.
But occasionally people watch TV and think it's real. This unfortunatly manifests itself most often with the six o'clock news, but CSI shows are a close second.

NY has handgun registration.
You'd think with the high amount of diversity in NYC that the state would be dominated by anti-genocide types. Guess not.

None in Kansas and I don't believe there is in Neb. But I do understand there is in Omaha by the city ordinance. Which brings up the question if you have ccw permit and drive through Omaha are you legal?

In Michigan:
W/out a CCW--you need to obtain a purchase permit from your local whatever.
After purchase--weapon must be taken back to whatever for registration.
With a CCW: buy weapon at store-store takes care of everything--you go home w/weapon.

No registration for shotgun or long gun...

None of that nonsense in AZ, and I get co workers who will tell me with total confidence that my sidearm must be registered. Nope, not required.

When it comes to the media and those who watch it, I am firmly conviced there are people who watch those CSI shows and think they ARE the Six O'Clock News.

No registration in kentucky, carry & conceal and also open carry. I do like it here ya can go with full auto or silencer with the paper work and taxes paid. I hunt, ginseng, trap, fish and camp having these option's make's it a safer and more enjoyable experince. There's a lot of rope patch's around this end of the state and i do not go unarmed in the hill's not smart. I bleed blue and love this state.

Unless it's less than 30" long, then MI says its' a "handgun", and it's registered as such.

I hear the same thing here in Ohio from time to time, especially in local news stories. I once called the local PD who were cited in a story and asked them if registration were required in their town. They said "no". I asked them why it was necessary to state that the guns involved in the incident in question weren't "registered". I asked them with whom they COULD be registered. They had no answer. I left a message with the same questions for the reporter. He never returned my call. The idea of someone expecting news stories to be factually accurate and unbiased!

The only gun laws in Ohio are state and federal laws. No state registration of non-NFA firearms, so other than federal registration of NFA items, no registration at all.

Re:Michigan
I had Dearborn police call me---We need to know how long your mini 14 ( with folding stock) is.........
It was around 28" w/ stock folded.
I took it down 2 years before to have it registered--they refused to register it " don't need to be"
I told them the size & it should be registered.
They said " bring it down here--we will measure it."
" Only we are capable of proper measurement"
I said " too late b/cause I sold it---here's Rugers phone #--call them"
These jerks got mad as hell--lucky I was not put in jail.
I showed them my sale papers & they finally left me alone.
Dealing with any of these little god dept. is bad news......................

BTY--Dearborn was charging $20 for registration--I got stuck with 22handguns-----State of MI went after them---now--no charge......

Nothing to talk about - we don't have any registration here.

The Nebraska Firearms Owners Association has been working to get rid of Omaha's illegal registration scheme. Omaha is going against state law by doing this, but since they're the 800 lb gorilla of the state they pretty much do whatever they want.

No registering of any sort up here in Alaska, you don't even need a permit to carry concealed.

You'd think that Nevada would be firearm friendly. Not so. They require a ccw permit, and in addition, require that you register your handguns. This does not equal a ccw permit, just a permit to possess the handgun.

AND its statutorily a criminal act for any agency to register or maintain a firearms registry in Florida................huge monetary penalty as well.

That's because the writers are either in L.A. or NYC and have no idea how things work in Free America. :D

Handgun registration is only for residents of Clark County. And you can open carry anywhere in Nevada without a permit.

Well we haven't cleared up the law in Michigan entirely.

You do not have to take the handgun to the police to have it physically inspected and registered any longer.

What you do is hand deliver, or mail, two copies of the completed pistol permit for them to register the handgun.

I think registering often refers to the yellow sheet one has to fill out buying a new gun. Since it is legal to privately trad guns in most states, it is more a way to track the gun back to the original purchaser.

Therefore, it is rather meaningless, and yes, TV shows have been implying a gun registration for years but they never explain it and it is not at all like a permit.
