I have a Remington that was a sniper rifle early in it's life. It has a 1.1" dia. barrel with muzzle break. the stock is HEAVY. I found a Remington VTR stock for a reasonable price that measures .951 ID in the barrel channel. The channel fits a round to triangular barrel. My question is: Has anyone tried to put a 700 S/A into a VTR stock as a retrofit? I would like to reduce the weight and improve the handling for deer hunting. Sorry: no picture because I do not put them on commercial sites like Photobucket!

If the barrel will fit in the barrel channel of the stock it will work. Some stock material may have to be removed. It may not make a huge difference in weight, most of it is in the barrel in this case anyway. It will certainly change the balance.

I've moved this to gunsmithing where I think you'll get better answers.

Not gonna lose much weight in the stock. You're going to have to either replace the barrel with a sporter contour, have it turned down in diameter, or fluted to reduce the weight very much.
