S&W 4583/4566 slide interchangeability?

I am offerred a 4583 (DAO) and have a 4566 upper; can I swap out and have it both ways?

Is the DAO mechanism all in the upper, or is the lower involved as well?

I can't imagine slides for a DAO and TDA (DA/SA) S&W interchanging on the same frame. The hammers, as well as the DAO slide being longer at the rear to mostly enclose the hammer, are totally different. But perhaps you should call S&W to be sure.

Really? I would actually be surprised if they didn't interchange, but I also don't own any S&W autos. I would think that it would be like many other designs, with the slide being basically unisex and the frame containing the trigger and hammer mechanism. Although with the slide mounted safeties of the S&W autos I might be way off.

Not sure about the 4566/4583, but my 4516 frame will take a 1066 upper,as will my 1006 frames. My 4516 or 1066 upper will not fit on my 4506 frame.

Hmmm

My 4516-2 upper will work on my 4506 (early with square trigger guard) lower, but would not on another similar model 4506 I had. The 4566 upper I have will probably work on the 4516 I just purchased, tho I'm out of the country right now and can't try it.
Lew Horton produced a run of 4596's which were a 4516 slide on a 4506 frame. This is a really interesting combination.
I asked a big name gunsmith who is very familiar with the S&W autos once when I first discovered it would fit before I shot it if that would work, and he said: "can't see why not", but it doesn't seem all interchange with all...Mine does though, and I realy like it.

I know the DAO slides are usually longer; but the 4583 doesn't look it; hammers can be changed, but I'm really wondering about the internal mechanism in the receiver; does anybody KNOW they will NOT interchange?

The 4583 should be a Tactical Smith & Wesson gun. If the 4566 slide is also from a TSW gun then there's a good chance they will interchange. In TSW series the same slide was used for both DAO and TDA guns.

If the 4566 slide is not from a TSW gun, then I would not count on them interchanging. However there is the possibility of installing the TDA "guts" from that slide into the slide of the 4583, which might work.
