Scope Height on a Black Rifle?

Most bolt rifles are going to be about 1.5". Because of the stock design on an AR 1.5" would be too low for almost anyone to see through the scope. 2" is about where it should be.

for some reason, the number 2.4" rings a bell, but it's been a while since i looked

Just checked my ACOG, which comes with its own Picatinny mount....it is 1.5", give or take .1". Works great for me.....perfect cheek weld, IMO.

That's a wee bit high. For a flip up iron, that would probably be sufficient, so long as the scope had that much drop adjustment.

OP: What distance will you be zeroing the optic?

Is the setup comfortable for you? If so, I wouldn't worry about it. For what it's worth, most of the one piece mounts that I've had for my ARs ran at a tad over 1.4".

oh my bad. 2.4 is height over bore (again, if i'm remembering correctly) not height from the flat top

edit: and i think that was still wrong... 2.6 is the number i was trying to remember

We must remember cheek weld though. As you said, comfortable. The heights over bore with enough adjustment is one thing, but if the op has to raise his head to see, then it's miffed.

My LaRue scope mount is ~2.7" over bore, 1.5" over rail (to center of scope). A2 Irons are closer to 1.4" over rail.

That's for most people's cheekbones (and to clear a folding backup rear sight). My face needs about a 1/4" less height, or a 1/4" cheek riser for a quick and repeatable cheek weld.
