Sell AR-15 and Keep AK-47?

"budget AK" is right on the money

I also bought one of these homely Slide Fire things for grins and giggles.

Works just like they claimed it would. It's really good for creating a supply of brass.:D

I've really sold my wife on the whole zombie thing. She's gonna be real pissed if she finds out it's just our excuse to keep buying more stuff.

Keep both, sell your car and buy more of ARs and AKs.
just kidding.
Think about cost if you do train or just flip a coin.
Both are great options for most anyone would use.
Personally for home defense I would stay away from carbine rounds unless you live in a farm due to potential liabilities.
Cheers.

I'm about to take the plunge and by my first "tactical" rifle. In my case, it's going to be an AK (well awkward cousin of the AK an AMD 65) as the AR-types I'm currently drooling over (LWRC M6a2) aren't in the budget. That said, I would definitely hold on to that AR...it is a sweet looking rifle. Let me guess, doc540, was this thread really just to show off that SBR AR? :D If so, I can't blame you because she's awesome.

keep both, stand the AK in the corner for bait when the Po-Po come kicking down your door and confiscating weapons after the hurricane, "for your safety", and after they leave with it, break out the AR with all those loaded 30 rounds Mags "for your safety"... LoL

spoken like a true tactician

(now, where's that "thumb's up" smilie thingie?)

And, thanks, Aethel, I just stumbled into a deal on that stubby little AR. Too good to pass up, really.

JDMorris, any old semi-auto in .223 or 7.62x39 will allow hits on a man-sized target to 200 yards or more. Folks have been doing it for decades. And if the deal is for serious expectations for targets beyond 200, I'd say it's time to step up to larger cartridges.

I've been messing with guns for the best part of seventy years. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that it's not WHAT you're using that's all that important. It's HOW GOOD you are at using it that makes the difference.

Owning a car doesn't make you a racer...

Keep both, the zombies will eventually happen. Mexico is already in chaos and if this thing gets worse, its a matter of years we will see it happening.
The main thing is you have to stock up on ammo. We dont want to be victims of the ammo shortage that was a year ago.

If you can keep both, they sort of fill different niches. That AR will break down into a much smaller package for transport than the AK, magazines are lighter (loaded 30-round steel AK magazines are nearly two pounds each), and that AR shorty plus a 20-round PMAG would be a lot handier than the AK to carry slung.

The AK is a great rifle, but isn't the easiest rifle in the world to tote around.

The AR15 is the better rifle. Superior ergonomics and control layouts, faster magazine changes, greater inherent mechanical accuracy, and much easier to adapt. There is really nothing the AK will provide you that the AR15 won't do better.
1. AK provides more stopping power
2. AK provides more reliability
3. AK provides more penetration

I personally prefer ARs over AKs, so I say keep the AR; although I've started to develop an AK craving recently...I only have experience owning and training with an AR, but once I buy and train with an AK, my preferences may change...or not, who knows.

For that role, I would keep whichever one you can get hits the easiest and quickest with at your expected ranges. For most folks that is the AR, unless you have a lot more background shooting and training with the AK.

It would also be easier to suppress the AR... just think about the confusion the zombies will have when they start seeing their home boys getting dropped and can't tell where it's coming from.

As far as the reliability difference goes, the AR should be plenty reliable for your purposes if you keep it properly lubed. Something like a hurricane is a temporary disaster. It's not like you will be up in the hills living off the land playing Wolverines. But maybe you should keep that AK around just in case! ;)

IMHO it's not worth selling the SBR because you're forfeiting the $200 tax stamp. You can't really come out ahead in that sense unless you sell the gun at a profit, which seems unlikely.

Unless you're really strapped for cash, I'd say just keep both. You will likely regret it if you sell either, unless you dislike one of them. In a WROL situation it makes sense to have weapons for friends/family that you might need to coordinate with.

"You can't really come out ahead in that sense unless you sell the gun at a profit, which seems unlikely."

I appreciate your input, but you're missing two important factors in that equation: how much I paid and what else goes with the package;)

Ok, one more: I've never lost money on any gun I've ever sold.

Which ever you decide to go with the ability to mount a light would be important to me for a social weapon. Personally, i'd go with the AKM if it runs well as it should. The AR is set up very nice though. :)

You can do what I did and sell the AR and buy a Saiga in 308 and trick it out and still keep a couple hundred bucks in your pocket at least. Then sell the other AK you have and start to build another AR **bangs head**. :)
