Sig P229 vs p226

I started with a P226 then switched over to the P228. I did not like the P229. The P229 is stainless and is a bit heavier. I did not like how it feels compared to the P228. Very minor difference but I would choose the P228. Out of those two I would choose the P229 because of the package size.

It all depends on what you are doing with the pistol.

Range gun? Carry gun? Home defense?

I personally prefer the Size of the P229. It is the proper size for carry, home defense and although not a race gun is more accurate than I am.

As others have pointed out I the P228 is the older lighter version of the P229. I prefer the P228 in 9mm over the P229 in 9mm. I believe that the P229 feels a little more top heavy than the P228. I also believe that it is a matter of personal preference which most often depends on which one you shot first not that one is better than the other.

I also own a P226 which is a great gun but is too large for me to carry concealed.

You didn't say which caliber. I had a 226/9. Nice gun but it didn't feel as well balanced as the 228 I now have in 9mm.

OTOH, for 40SW, the added barrel weight probably helps control muzzle flip. I do have a 226/40 and it's a good gun but I'm just not big on 40SW.

Bottom line, for 9mm, I'd go 228 or 229.

I prefer the 226/228. The 229 has always felt too bulky and wide to me.

The specs that I have, the width is the same on all three (228/229/226). The 239 is narrower IIRC.

I like my 229 because I CC it. Good size, a little bulky but it runs really smooth and 100% reliable to this point. For some reason I'm pretty accurate with it too, as I use it to shoot IDPA. If it ain't broke I ain't fixin' it.

Who do you love more your wife or your mother?

Are you implying that one of the two is larger than the other but both are rock solid? Dangerous waters your wading in.... :p

I have both, and these days, I prefer the 226 over the 229, mainly because the extra half inch of barrel length gives me about 100fps more out of the 357SIG round over the 229.

For all intents and purposes, they are really the same size gun. The 229 is a little fatter in the slide, the 226 is a little skinnier and a half inch longer, neither of which means anything carry wise. Personally, I find the 226 has a slightly more comfortable grip, even though its virtually the same size as the 229's.

If your looking to choose, your best bet is to go to a shop that has both and compare them side by side. While very similar, they both have their own feel, and you may like one over the other for whatever reason. Better yet, if you can rent them and shoot them, you'll have even a better idea. I doubt you'll see any difference there though either. Mine all seem to shoot the same.
