I am stunned!
A friend of mine, Ernie, GAVE me a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .458 Win Mag!!!
The story goes like this; my buddy is in the Army right now, we I met while working the Gun Dept. at Sports Authority. He’s back on recovery leave due to a gunshot wound received in Iraq and stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso. His wife, who is a former HS classmate of my middle daughter, and he are down here in Miami for his son’s birthday with family visits and so forth. An old uncle of his invites them over to visit.
The uncle as it turns out, has a “bunch of old rifles” and offers Ernie his choice of these weapons. Ernie picks out a Weatherby .460, the Winchester, an FN 49, a Colt Sauer in .30-06, a full length Moisin-Nagant rifle, a Czech Brno Mauser, an old Navy Arms muzzle loader and a bolt action rifle I couldn’t identify from the pictures.
I asked him to bring over the Winchester just to see it and see if it was a Pre-64. So he brings it over and sadly the rifle was not well kept with some surface rust towards the muzzle. It was also not a Pre-64 but still a beautiful rifle.
I explained the history of the Winchester Model 70 to him and showed him how to work the 3 position safety and generally lamented as to the condition it was in. I did tell him that if he ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know, as I’d always wanted one. We talked some more and he and his wife left.
This morning he calls me up and says he needs to stop by and see me before I head in to work. He shows up with the rifle, hands it to me and says, “Here you can give it a better home and care than I can.” I was speechless, which as some of you guys might know, is rare for me!
I told him I couldn’t accept such a gift, he’d just gotten it and it was a gift to him. He pish poshed it and said the only thing he wanted was to be able to shoot it when I had it refurbished. Wouldn’t take no for an answer. Even gave half a box of 500 grain solids to go with it!
Now I have a project gun that I never, ever thought I’d have!!
