Let me just start from the beginning. On Wednesday September the 27th my son Isaac and I were in Walmart around 6pm. I stopped to look at their gun display and saw that they had a heavy barreled Savage rifle priced $269. I thought that was a pretty good deal and wanted to have a look at the rifle. After waiting 30 minuets, I left the gun counter, finished my shopping and went home.
The next day I went back to the store after work and there was a person behind the counter. I asked to look at the rifle. I was handed the rifle and the tag on the rifle stated it was a Savage Axis. I told the nice lady that I would take one. I filled out the 4473 on the computer everything went good. She started putting the SN# for the display gun on the paperwork. I asked if they had another rifle in the back. She said she would check , but would have to have someone watch the counter for her. About 20 minuets later someone showed up to watch the counter. About another 20 minuets later I was told that was the only one they had, I said I would take it. She comes to the counter with the rifle box and finished the paperwork and then called for a manager to ring up the sale. Well we waited a good while while before a manager showed up. The paperwork was double checked the they rang up the rifle. And told the total was $437. Now I know that our tax is not that high, I said that the rifle had a tag saying it was $269. This is when they discovered that they had the wrong tag on the rifle. They asked what I wanted to do, I said buy the rifle for the marked price. The manager said that she could not mark it down because it was a federal regulated item. I said that was BS. I was told that I would have to come back the next day. By this time Two hours had passed and I went home.
Friday I got off at noon and went back to the store. The department manager was there and I told her what had happened. The first thing she says is that guns were Federal regulated and she couldn’t mark it down. I told her that was BS and that she needed to get someone above her pay grade to talk with me. Another manager showed up a short time later and advised of the situation. First she tells me that guns are Federal regulated and could not be marked down. I told her that she was the third person to tell me that same lie. She then told me that she was not going to mark the gun down and that was it. I asked her for the home office phone number. With as much attitude as possible she said. “It’s 1-800- Walmart, and you can call them if you want “ . That was another 30 minuets wasted at Walmart.
When I got home I called the home office. A very nice lady took my call. I told her about the situation and the amount of time it took. She apologized and told me that the store manager was the one that had the final say so in the store. She said she would contact the store manager and that I shop be contacted on Monday.
About an hour later a manager from the store contacted me to ask what had happened. I advised him of everything that had happened and he said he would get back to me. Saturday morning he called me back and said there must have been a miscommunication about the price of the gun when I went to buy it. I told him that there was no miscommunication, that the gun was clearly marked $269. He told me that he had to check something and would get back to me.
He called back later and said that he had talked to the store manager and they were willing to give me a $100 gift card to put towards the purchase of the gun or use as I saw fit. I told him that would work for me.
Today I picked up the gift card and went to buy the rifle. About an hour and fifteen minutes later I left the store with the rifle. That is the longest it has ever taken me to buy a Gun.
Here’s the gun.

Looks like a nice rifle. I keep looking at the Axis II as an affordable range gun. Do you have any plans on changing anything or keeping it stock? And did it come down to $337 or $169 with the gift card?

It came down to $337 after the gift card was applied. I’m going to shoot it as is to see how it shoots. But I do plan to change the scope.

I can't say for certain that its the same in all states, but I can tell you for certain Walmart managers can lower the price on a firearm here in Tennessee. I actually worked at a local Walmart in the sporting goods department in my teenage years and witnessed it happen multiple times usually for the item being incorrectly labelled. My local Walmart is also able to tell how many of a certain gun they have on hand through a PC they have behind the counter and the inventory counts are almost never off when it comes to firearms. It sounds like you found a store either full of people that didn't know what they were doing, or were trying their hardest not to lose money correcting their mistake like they should have.

I think was a little of both.
Might be a 'Wal-Mart' thing.. Either way, I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face if someone told me that,,,
I came close to asking the third one is she was trying to blow smoke up my #%@.
The manager that got me the gift card didn’t tell me what the home office told them, but he made it clear that they were not happy with the way I was treated. I must have poked a hornets nest with that phone call.

It's a non-educated Associate thing. I have bought guns at work before, but never had a problem. Even when things all go right, it is a PITA. I apologize on behalf of all the Associates who actually do know what they are doing, Lee.

Let's just say that all involved will have a 'nice chat' in the office, and have to take the training for Firearms Transactions again.

I would have asked which federal regulator sets their pricing.

I’m glad they made it right, but they showed themselves to be total clowns on the way.

The $100 they paid out is probably nothing compared to the money they will lose just from people who will read this thread and decide to skip a trip or buy less next trip. I wish I could boycott them some more, but spending the less than zero I’ve spent at Walmart over the past 12 years would be impossible!

The lady that waited on me today told me that she hadn’t done a gun sale in over two months and was rusty.
When I got home she called and said that she had written down the wrong transaction number for the sale on her paperwork and asked if I could give it to her from my receipt. I told her I would be happy to and did so. She apologized for having to call me. I told her it was ok and that she had been a sweetheart.

Walmart can be difficult to deal with when buying firearms. If an individual or small shop makes a mistake and sells a gun to the wrong person and they do something wrong with it the odds are that no one will go after the seller. Even if they win a lawsuit most small gun shops don't have any money to payout. But if Walmart makes a mistake a victim sees deep pockets and will sue for tons of money. I understand their extra caution.

As far as the gun being priced wrong I've found that the odds are about 50/50 that any store will honor the mistake. But to make up BS about federal law is just wrong.

A couple of years ago I stopped in a Walmart in the next county over. While 25 miles from home I was driving right by it on my way home and it was easier than to drive out of the way to go to the one 6 miles from home. They had a gun that I decided I wanted. It took 30 minutes for them to figure out that since it was after 7 PM on a Sunday there wasn't anyone in the store trained to do the paperwork. But told me they would give me a $50 gift card if I came back on Monday.

It ended up being a longer than necessary process, but they had a unique gun that I hadn't seen anywhere else, It came with a $50 rebate and I got a $50 gift card that I used to buy the gun.

I think my only Wally World purchase was a NEF pump 20 youth gun. No major issues there but the way that they escort you to the door and don’t let you buy ammo and guns in the same transaction is just frustrating. I’m certain that I have seen at least a hundred people walk to put away a gun, leave brand new gun in the car, and walk back in to buy ammo. I don’t trust people not to steal the gun while I’m back inside getting ammo. So what I did on that 20ga, I bought everything else I wanted at the gun counter, and put it all back in the buggy, then just happen to notice it and decide to buy it. I rolled my buggy (with ammo) and the associate carried my shotgun.

at least you can buy guns at walmart. around here there are only about 4 in the whole state that even carry throwing clays, forget about guns or ammo. I asked one time and the blue smocked lady damn near had quadruplets in the isle.

Pricing mistakes happen. Employees are often poorly trained and somewhat poorly paid. Their price is whatever the POS system says it is, not really the store employees fault. When you have a machine as big as Walmart, some gears are gonna grind. Its sort of the price you pay for not shelling out the extra $100 for the rifle at the LGS.

Yes, they walked me out the front door and handed me my gun. But on the way out I told the guy that it was kind of funny because, I has two AR 15s and a hand gun in the car. His eyes got bigger when I told him that I had a gun on me.

Gunny that’s too funny.
I now buy online and the shop I deal with is a small business run out of the guys home. He expects everyone he deals with to be carrying. So no biggie.
The only problem with him is he’s cool and we wind up chatting forever. So probably as much time spent as your transaction.

Time spent in good conversation is worth the the time, but time spent waiting for poorly trained people to do the job they are paid to do, is wasted.

That’s nice, you got home without the trigger lock still on it. Better service than my Wal-Mart.

Last perp walk, Rural King, I told the manager it was a pointless gesture since I had a pistol on my hip. He looked surprised for a moment and then agreed it was pointless.

I’m with you, in that I can’t stand incompetence.
And lie to me and I get real nasty real fast.

I understand mistakes but lies are deliberate.

As for good conversation, I’m with you except when I have to be somewhere else. So I try to make sure I’m in no hurry when dealing with him as I learn a lot chewing the fat.

I bet that the home office would have had a coronary if you had recorded the whole thing on a go pro or such.;) Anyone can defend the actions of an employee but to be treated like you were is a whole breakdown in the customer relations aspect of keep the customer happy. I also try to avoid darkening their door step any more than possible. It is a shame though as I first thought they were pro 2A but watching for years I now know that it is all for maximum profit. I hate being treated like a criminal just for exercising my constitutional right while purchasing a firearm legally in their store.
