yesterday i got to go shooting with my dad, and i got to try out my new 1858 Remington Texas. this has got to be the best time i have had in so long. i got up nice and early and we got out there with lots of ammo, powder and caps.

i loaded up my 58 Remmy with about 15 grains of Jim Shockey's FFFG powder, set up some milk jugs and soda cans out there about 50 feet away and loaded up my Super Companion for him to shoot (he loves that pistol) and let some lead fly!! i am still getting used to how it handles, but i was really destroying those soda cans! my favorite target is soda cans filled with water, you can really see the power of what you are shooting with how the cans explode! they got really obliterated! i also shot my .50 flintlock, and impressed some other shooters with it! some folk went out to shoot .22s with their kids and finished and got interested when they saw me drop the loading lever on my gun. we struck a conversation on guns, and they seemed quite fascinated by my blackpowder firearms. i got my .44 Remmy all loaded up and put that in my holster, and the man asked about my flintlock rifle. so i got the tompion out of the muzzle, and got quite a reaction on the big bore. so he said "i wanna see this thing shoot!" and i agreed that it was about time i shot the thing. i got some powder (70 grains) and poured it down the muzzle. then i took the big heavy .50 Minnie ball and rammed it home. then i primed my pan, and walked out there a little ways to my target. i pulled the hammer back to full cock, clicked the double set triggers, and aimed. i squeezed the trigger and boom! lots of smoke and a big hole in the target! it was great! then i let some lead fly with my Remington, i fired three aimed, and then fanned the other three!

i think i might have inspired someone to start blackpowder shooting as well! the world needs more blackpowder shooters! the blackpowder shooters i have met were some of the nicest people i have met, what's not to like about blackpowder!

i also experimented with some different loads in my new Remington, and found a great load for my gun. i really like this new gun! it feels like it's the right size and the right caliber, it has the top strap and notched cylinder for safe carrying of all six rounds, and looks wonderful! one of my favorite parts is that i don't have to take the cylinder out, i can just load it right on the gun! and to think i wanted a smokeless .22 rifle instead, i didn't want my dad to have to go through the paperwork, fees and such of buying a cartridge gun and Cabelas was having a revolver sale, so i caved and bought myself a new Pietta revolver. I'm glad i got that instead, i think i am having more fun with it anyway!

i got some video of me shooting and as soon as i get it edited and uploaded i will post a link here pretty soon!

Sincerely, Levi

Firing at reactive targets is a lot of fun.
My outdoor club won't let us shoot at steel unless it's sanctioned. But some guys have made a simple target stand that has a swinging bowling pin or two hanging from it.
I have some bowling pins and would like to build one too. It's better than having to the set the pins back up after every few shots or shooting at them laying on the ground.

I'm glad to hear that the Shockey's Gold is working out so well in your guns. I like loading the revolver with APP 3F too, and sometimes it produces enough smoke to obscure the target.

Great collection Skinny! i like the bullet mold between those colts in the second picture, i think i need to get a traditional bullet mold for my guns!

Arcticap, i use APP in everything buy my cap and ball .22s, i love the smoke! you touch that baby off and you have to wait for the smoke to clear, or aim through it! i just love it though! i almost exclusively shoot reactive targets unless I'm sighting in. but i like to have some loose dirt behind the target to produce a nice little explosion like a mortar!

water filled milk jugs are fun, and soda cans full of water are awesome because they really explode when you shoot them with something high caliber! steel spinner targets are great for .22s, i made myself a set of two little gong targets that will swing to the top when you shoot them, and you can knock them back down too! i really like taking the powder out of plastic caps and putting it onto a sheet of duct tape then putting another sheet over the powder gently. you can shoot this, and it will give a nice little explosion! mud is fun too because it splatters and makes a nice big hole. the clay that's in Sonoma County soil is very good because you can take a huge lump of wet clay and shoot that! you can get kind of a wound channel and you can even see the expansion of your bullets! i think i want to load my rifle with some buck and ball and let loose at some soda cans, i will probably film that and post it here, hopefully soon!

I haven't shot them with a BP revolver yet but clay birds make good reactive targets. Just spread some out on the berm and shoot away. Then stand pieces of what's left of them close together in a clump and shoot at them some more.

I'll also hot glued an array of clay birds to a piece of cardboard for hanging on a target stand, and they bust up nicely when hit.

I saved a bunch of plastic Easter eggs and filled them up with flour.
Then I hung them up on the target and stand and they "poofed" up in an cloud of white smoke when hit.

When loading the APP, I heavily compress it and top it off with home made juice carton wads. The more compression that's used will help it to produce more power.
Keep making lots of smoke and enjoy that new shootin' iron pard! :D

i love clay targets! i found a few yesterday and shot those! i discovered my can hanger target makes a wonderful clay target holder as well! I'll post a picture so you can see how it works! it is also fun to shoot pieces of sidewalk chalk, the kind kids draw on stuff with. it kind of produces a poof of chalk! i also like flat rocks, they bust into chunks! you have to be careful though, shooting rocks isn't the safest. some other good reactive targets are those little Neco wafers, they are a challenge to hit but shatter nicely when you do hit them! and balloons, don't forget those. put a little flour in them and blow em' up, when you shoot them they puff into a burst of flour! you can also load your revolver with shot and put the balloons in a ravine, they will float down at a good pace, and you can have your buddy letting them go upstream a good distance so you will have moving targets! i also like to shoot old fruit, i have a pear tree and once the pears get big and too soft you can shoot them and they really splatter!

Aaaaauuuggggh - you're killin' me, Levi!

Have to work Saturday; else I'd load up target racks, pistols, .22 rifles, some clays, 2-3 gallons of water 100-200 balls in .454 (Remmies) and .451 (Matt's Colt); pound or so of Pyrodex, 1350 rd 'milk jug' of .22LR ; and of course, my shooting pard (son) Matt. We'd be out of the house come 6AM, horses fed and at the range and set up around 0630; and bangin' away by 0635! Be on the way back home by noon, shortly after the temps crack 100.

But I have to work..... 0730-???PM.

But wait, there's always Sunday morning! Yeah we could catch the 6:30 evening Mass Saturday. That's what my Dad would suggest.

YEEEEAAAAHHHHHH!
Heeheeheeheeheeheehee..... giggle.... snort

i fired three aimed, and then fanned the other three!
:what:

Levi, I'm glad you had a good time shooting with your dad, and demonstrating the joys of muzzleloading to others. However I don't recommend that you fan your revolver. It may seem cool and impressive, but it can sure wear out parts in a hurry. Fanning puts a heck of an extra load on the moving parts and can batter the daylights out of the hand (pawl), bolt stop, and cylinder notches. :uhoh:

Please rethink the cost/benefit ratio of fanning. Your revolver will last much longer and cost you less in repairs if you don't fan.

Just my 2 cents.:)

So Levi says to his trusted Indian Scout, "LOts of Indians out there, looks like
we are in a heap of trouble. " His Indian friend replys " What do you mean we?"

i just got another video up, but this time it's just featuring my 1858 Remmy! this gun is my favorite! feels like i am really shooting something with all that gunsmoke and noise and a little recoil! in my opinion a little recoil can be a good thing. it kinda feels good to me to shoot a firearm that lets you know when you smoke something out. http://www.youtube.com/user/busyhands94?feature=mhee#p/a/u/0/54idZIzXVLo

The outlaw Levi Wales.

When I was in my teens/twenties, I liked rapid fire with an AK.
Now in my forties, I like shooting BP.

Your going to have to lift some weights and build your strength up a little
so you don't have to use both hands to hold the pistol up. You do know that
it's a "Handgun" and not a "Handsgun" It's called a Handgun for a reason.

i am plenty strong, but i prefer to shoot with two hands because that's what i was taught and learned to do. i can shoot one handed, but it feels weird like "what do i do with this other hand?" i guess it really all boils down to personal preference. i just feel like i can get better gun control with two hands. those so-called gun control experts like Sarah Brady or Hilary Clinton don't really address proper stance, or getting a good grip, and sight picture. they don't even address the basics! from what i can tell they probably aren't a very good shot, i don't know what to make of the stuff they are saying. haha!!

I guess it just looks odd to me. I never saw John Wayne, or Clint Eastwood
or any western movie where they shot with two hands. Not even in any
civil war movie. At the battle of Gettysburg either. Just looks odd to me. But
remember I'm almost 70 and of the old school. Later on if you ever get around
to shooting at a regular club you will have to shoot with one hand, and this
will be all new to you. Just last Sunday at our club shoot we had a new member who tried to shoot pistol. He said all he knew was two handed. Well
the one hand thing he is having to learn. He is about 40.Anyway Good Luck
