yesterday i got to go shooting with my dad, and i got to try out my new 1858 Remington Texas. this has got to be the best time i have had in so long. i got up nice and early and we got out there with lots of ammo, powder and caps.
i loaded up my 58 Remmy with about 15 grains of Jim Shockey's FFFG powder, set up some milk jugs and soda cans out there about 50 feet away and loaded up my Super Companion for him to shoot (he loves that pistol) and let some lead fly!! i am still getting used to how it handles, but i was really destroying those soda cans! my favorite target is soda cans filled with water, you can really see the power of what you are shooting with how the cans explode! they got really obliterated! i also shot my .50 flintlock, and impressed some other shooters with it! some folk went out to shoot .22s with their kids and finished and got interested when they saw me drop the loading lever on my gun. we struck a conversation on guns, and they seemed quite fascinated by my blackpowder firearms. i got my .44 Remmy all loaded up and put that in my holster, and the man asked about my flintlock rifle. so i got the tompion out of the muzzle, and got quite a reaction on the big bore. so he said "i wanna see this thing shoot!" and i agreed that it was about time i shot the thing. i got some powder (70 grains) and poured it down the muzzle. then i took the big heavy .50 Minnie ball and rammed it home. then i primed my pan, and walked out there a little ways to my target. i pulled the hammer back to full cock, clicked the double set triggers, and aimed. i squeezed the trigger and boom! lots of smoke and a big hole in the target! it was great! then i let some lead fly with my Remington, i fired three aimed, and then fanned the other three!
i think i might have inspired someone to start blackpowder shooting as well! the world needs more blackpowder shooters! the blackpowder shooters i have met were some of the nicest people i have met, what's not to like about blackpowder!
i also experimented with some different loads in my new Remington, and found a great load for my gun. i really like this new gun! it feels like it's the right size and the right caliber, it has the top strap and notched cylinder for safe carrying of all six rounds, and looks wonderful! one of my favorite parts is that i don't have to take the cylinder out, i can just load it right on the gun! and to think i wanted a smokeless .22 rifle instead, i didn't want my dad to have to go through the paperwork, fees and such of buying a cartridge gun and Cabelas was having a revolver sale, so i caved and bought myself a new Pietta revolver. I'm glad i got that instead, i think i am having more fun with it anyway!
i got some video of me shooting and as soon as i get it edited and uploaded i will post a link here pretty soon!
Sincerely, Levi
