We ought to make a sticky:
- Wal-Mart is not turning "anti gun". They're still carrying firearms and ammunition in 700+ stores.
- In some stores, Wal-Mart is trying to compete with Target's "look and feel".
- In some regions of the country, Wal-Mart wages are not enough to find competent people capable of supervising the filling out of 4473's or the maintenance of the FFL register.
The majority of Wal-Marts here in SE WI still carry firearms and ammunition. The only one's that have stopped that I'm aware of are the two that are closest in to urban Milwaukee. Those in the (still) close suburbs and further out still carry firearms.
Wal-Mart is ruthlessly efficient. This is an economic decision.
Also, there seems to be a HUGE boom nationwide in the building of "Big Box" outdoor stores, Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Outdoor World, and Sportsman's Warehouses are popping up like mushrooms, at least here in the midwest. I partly suspect that Wal-Mart's puny little gun racks can't compete. Their buying power is HUGE, but a more dedicated chain's purchasing power and pricing on firearms may well be better in the long run.
