In the Heavy Gear (RPG/tactical tabletop game) sourcebook Into the Badlands, in the entry on "Redjacket Swarms" in the chapter on Flora and Fauna, there's an interesting sidenote about how some badlanders choose to fight against the swarms: shotgun shells loaded with fine sand, which, whilst tear-assing through the air (and through the swarm), would shred the fine, membranous wings of the redjackets, rendering them helpless.
Obviously, this'd give your barrel the business, and might foul your shottie up (that's why they make Maverick cheapies!), but, in theory, it might work. Plus, you could call your loads "Bugshot".
