i have read different thoughts on surplus 7.62 nato ammo. can you guys verify which ones are good. lithuanian, south african, american tactical(mke turkey), port,& i have read some good & bad things about german 2 different kinds.

Lithuanian and ATI are not surplus but new production from factories that primarily supply their militaries. Those would be my top choices if prices were comparable.

West German surplus works well but isn't reloadable. I would only buy it at a discount to reloadable ammo.

No personal experience with SA or Portugese but they seem to get good reviews.

South African and Portuguese are both good. Australian is excellent. Indian is bad (though there are some specific subsets of Indian that are okay). Argentinian is fine.

Portuguese, Lthuanian, Israeli, and Austrailian are very good to my experience. You have to know your headstamps sometimes. I saw what was advertised as Nigerian 7.62x51. I normally would avoid something like that but examined it and found the headstamp was Hirtenberger (made in Austria). Being "Nigerian" it was priced low and I bopught a bunch of it. It didn't have the NATO cross, chronographed a little faster, and worked well in the 7.62 NATO semiautos without adjustment.

I think we gave the Lithuanians the machinery make their 7.62 NATO when we gave them M14s during the Clinton era. It also has the plus of being boxer primed.

The Lithuanian is the most accurate shooting that I have used. Portugese was second. German, with MEN headstamp was the worst.

It doesn't always matter what is the best though, because you may not be able to find any of the kind you want. Portugese disappeared for many years, I am seeing a little bit of it again now. Lithuanian is gone as far as I can tell. You can't find it at gun shows or online.
