Working on an AK-47

I recently picked up an AK-47 at a gun show. It's in good condition, but the stock is chipped and wobbly, so I opened it for surgery to put in a new stock. The old trunnion is riveted in, and I want to replace it. Anybody know the best way to remove those rivets? Any suggestions would appreciated.

I have done LOTS of rivets in my airframe sheemetal days

get a center-punch for a nice drill starting hole and drill slowly until you get a good straight hole going. The whole point ot this is to be able to 'pop' the head of the rivit off and then 'drift' the rivet stem & shophead out with a drift and hammer.........while not actually drilling into the hole so-as not to make it oversize in any way.

.........two things are much different when drillin on an AK though!! The thing was never meant to be repaired in the first place, rather disposed of if anything more than component replacment is required

I'm not sure if you have the proper replacment rivets size wise. Perhaps you do though but I will 'assume' you will have to replace them with US standard rivets so you will have to go oversize anyways for a proper fit. DO NOT use a pop or pull rivet!!!
