I can't comment any further on details till Ruger makes an official announcement.
But- Ruger's selling the older wood/rubber Compact grips again separately, if you should need or want those.

I swore years ago that I would not buy any more guns, and I'm much more of a S&W guy than a Ruger guy - but a 3 in. GP in .44 Spl. would be SO tempting........ I just wish they had not waited so long, but of course it's NOT a "popular" round (at least not until you handload it and shoot it a bunch) and I already have a S&W 696. But a GP in .44? Oh PLEASE take my money......... PLEASE make it in 3 in.!

I'll bet you a packet of noodles that this new Ruger will be stronger than the Charter Arms guns! Buffalo Bore ammo safe too!! :D

SHOT is Jan 17-20.
Might take that long for an announcement, might not.

Stronger than a Charter?
Is a horse stronger than a cat? :)

I'm not even a great .44 Special fan, but even I'd be interested.
The only gun I have in that caliber's a Ruger/Lypsey Flattop from when they first came out, so if a DA Ruger should happen along....
Denis

"stronger than a Charter?" I'll bet it'll be stronger than your wrists.

This one has me in a mental pickle. I would love to have a GP100 .44, but I wish it were for .44 magnum, even if all I ever fed it was Special-level loads. I don't want to add another caliber to reload for. Makes it even harder for me to wrap my noggin around that my 4.25" 69 and the upcoming 2.75" 69 will have my five-shot .44 needs well covered.

Must keep thinking, surely there is a way I can rationalize or justify this to myself.

Easy for me, because I never shoot cartridges except what matches the stamping on the barrel, e.g.. 44 Magnums never see 44 Special ammo. Aside from that, the Specials are typically on a smaller framed gun, and this Ruger is no exception. The GP is a 357 Magnum platform, I presume down to 5 shots in 44 Special.

I may not have been clear, but I do not presently reload .44 Special, only .44 mag, so it would be one more type of brass to deal with, and if I were serious enough, probably another toolhead/die set/powder measure to buy because I hate having to re-setup dies on my Dillon.

I use a Lee Classic Cast Turret for my lower volume cartridges. You only need two dies and a powder measure activation plug to make the difference between 44 Special and 44 Magnum. The powder change is simply swapping a preset insert. Using my Hornady LnL for everything would drive me crazy or force me to forgo the case and bullet feeder on short runs. That wouldn't be that bad, but the turret is just so easy, and I am very proficient with it.

Just sent Mike Fifer an email expressing my interest in a .44 Special in a GP100. Would love to see this happen!

No need to keep sending him emails asking for one. :)
Honest.

Just wait a bit & you can send him a Thank You email instead.

Okay Denis, I will start saving up for that "Great Come and Get It Day"!

If they only do a limited "one product launch," I can't imagine they'll do it in anything but a carry length, and in trying to impress, I'm betting that means a 3". If so, I'll buy one.

No real interest in a 5.5", MAYBE a little intrigue for a 4.2" belt gun. But in a 2.5-3.5" carry revolver, I'll conceal one daily during the winter.

I don't think I'd be able to conceal one on my small frame, but IMHO there's about nothing better for a belt gun than a packable .44 special!! And with some CCI shot shell cartridges you talk about a versatile snake killer companion! SO versatile right now, capable of everything from defense against animals, humans, and even serpents!! :D

If it does indeed have a 3" tube, I'll be getting one of these!!

PS: For those of you that like .44 shotshells, check out this new offering from CCI:

It's one of their shot cartridges but loaded with larger #4 shot. The .44 special just got even more versatile!!
