I wanted to add a P-series Sig to my collection, and I chose this P225-A1 Classic as my first P-series (definitely won't be my last). It is a single-stack (8+1) 9mm DA/SA with decocker. I was also considering a M11-A1 or a Legion P229, but my high cap carry needs are already covered by other guns in my stable (Sig P320, Sig SP2022, Glock 19, M&P 40 FS, etc.) and the P225 fits my hand like the gun was custom made for me!
Some will say that the P225 is large for a single-stack, and that is true, but the extra size and heft make it a terrific shooter. I chose the "Classic" version because I love the look of wood grips as opposed to the G10 grips on the Nitron version. The gun came with SigLite Night Sights, and the Sig SRT (short-reset trigger). The DA trigger pull is fairly heavy but smooth and predictable, and the SA trigger pull is sweet; light and crisp. With the SRT, shooting to the reset is a dream!
After field-stripping, inspecting, clean/lube, I took it to the range this morning. The targets shown in the photos are the very first rounds out of the gun. Shot at 7yds. with a combination of Winchester 124gr. FMJ NATO-spec range fodder, Speer Gold Dot 124gr. +P JHP and Hornady Critical Defense 115gr. FTX. Not bad for the very first shooting session I think. I ran app. 150 rounds through the gun without a single malfunction, which is normal for a Sig.
I had only two minor issues. First, the way the slide-lock lever is positioned, my high thumbs-forward grip nudged it a couple of times, causing the slide to not lock back after the last round fired. Correcting this required only a small adjustment in my grip. Second, the grip screws shot loose a little by the end of the session. This is not uncommon with wood grips. To correct this I simply installed Challis low-profile grip-screw o-rings between the screw head and the grip. I have put these on all my other guns with wood grips, and it always solves the problem. I prefer this solution to using lock-tite, which also will work.
I bought the gun online from Grab-A-Gun. Paid $829.00. I already love this gun, it is such a sweet shooter. I now see why P-series Sigs have such a loyal following! I am already planning my next purchase, most likely a P229 Legion.
