My brother is a huge history buff and I'm looking for a pistol that would have some historical significance for him to Ccw. I'm not talking the derringer that shot Lincoln but rather a gun model that in some way influenced history. I have been thinking a makorav, tokarev clone, or something along those lines. Any ideas?

Browning Hi-Power. 1927 (I think, if I didn't get the date right, it should be close enough) is pretty historical! Still alive and kicking too! Lots of older production out there, and even some commie knock offs! Very influential pistol, perhaps even the first of the "wonder nines" that actually took off and kinda kicked off the "high capacity" trend. Also, it is a Browning linkless locked/tilting breech design, which is still pretty much standard on service pistols.

Perhaps just a little bit big for CCW though, although not out of the realm of possibility for most people.

If he wants a gun model that in some way influenced history I'd also have to nominate the M1911........ Been through two world wars and numerous other conflicts for most of the twentieth century. There's a gun with some serious historical background. I also like the Colt Cobra suggestion because they are now available again, (MSRP of 699. IIRC) and I'll bet they are sweet!...... If your brother had one of those he could call it his "Jack Ruby Commemorative model".

.36 caliber Avenging Angel. :)
Seriously, for historical reasons, yet still reamining a functional defensive firearm, everything above will work. What time period is he most fascinated by and what area? You mentioned Mak and Tok - is he into Cold War Soviet stuff?

CZ82 is a great option if he's looking for Cold War stuff. That would likely be my pick from that period. 12rds of a viable round (not a horse stopper, but not bad), very accurate for a small pistol and usually have a good trigger with alright sights.

1911, Colt Police Positive or Detective Special, Colt 1903, Hi-Power, PPK (although it influenced popular culture more than history), Makarov, S&W Model 10 (*THE* classic police revolver).

Cold war era is something he finds fascinating. But he likes all the way back to early 1900's.

Ah, here's an idea that is functional and though not period correct, will probably flip his lid - the Cz-75 Cold War commemorative pistol. Shouldn't be too expensive and is still a 15 round DA/SA pistol. :)

I know I get boring saying this, but do NOT carry any gun with a high value or of historical/sentimental interest. He should not be carrying a gun for fun or to show off. If he uses that gun, it will be seized by the police and he may never get it back (assuming he does not end up in prison). A carry gun should be reliable, but not a museum specimen or of other than ordinary value.

Lots of good suggestions: a nice old Colt or S&W 38 snub, a Makarov, a Charter Arms Bulldog, a CZ82 or CZ83...

Those are all good guns that I own and would feel comfortable carrying.

Except I don't consider the value of my life to be "ordinary."

You only have two choices in a self-defense situation...winning or losing. I will gladly use a expensive gun that I may never see again if it means winning.

As for the O.P.'s question many guns used for concealed carry until the last 40+/- are small calibers. A Colt 1908 (.380) is a nice flat gun that will conceal well. If you can find one Colt did a run of them a few years ago using modern steel.

"Son of Sam" Charter Arms .44 Bulldog.

Yeah, I guess that's history, too, isn't it? :)

The OP's "history" is kind of broad. He mentions military pistols, so I guess he means military history. A Walther P-1 is too big for CC, I guess, but as a gun for a military history buff to have, that would be my first choice. Or, the original WW2 P-38 if he can afford it.

A better option might be the Beretta M1934 in .380. They were introduced in 1934, not surprisingly. I saw one at a big gun store a few years ago and regretted not buying it. Should be compact and affordable enough. The only European Axis Power pistol (that I'm aware of) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. They were a failure as a military pistol because of the .380's poor performance at long range, but that shouldn't matter for CC...380 should be plenty adequate, and I think that the gun itself was pretty reliable.
