James Yeager's latest .40 sucks video.

I despise the .40 primarily because it represents the "participation trophy" mindset that has us all appeasing the slowest and weakest among us, and because I resent it for taking the popularity I think is due it's parent cartridge, the 10mm Auto, a cartridge of much higher performance and utility. But it will be with us a while. When the .40 came out they said the 10mm Auto was dead. That was 30 years ago and the 10mm Auto has arguably never been more alive.

of course it would still be a small framed gun.

what, and take your word a 38 super won't fit in any currently produced gun. not a chance. you don't know that.

murf

No, it wouldn't. This has already been decided buddy. We literally already have a term for a small framed gun that has been enlarged to take a .38 Super/.45 ACP/10mm Auto--it is called a "large frame."

I picked up a Glock 27 in its standard .40 caliber at a pawn shop about a decade ago. It was my first large-caliber reasonably concealable semi-auto - and it was cheap (under $400). I qualified for my CHL with it, carried it most of the time, pulled it twice in tight situations, and never fired it in anger. I carry it less since I lost 160 pounds and have a harder time concealing its brick-like profile, preferring smoother nines most of the time. It still serves in other functions.

I never felt under-protected with the little .40, I just went for a more comfortable and convenient weapon.

I will say that it is my only .40 and the only center-fire round that I don't reload. It is also my only Glock.

Now there's a good reason to HATE a cartridge. Do the .32ACP folks HATE .380ACP.

I've never understood WHY there is such loyalty to the 10mm. Why is there fierce loyalty to ANY cartridge?

Police don't carry 380, 357, 38spl, 10mm, 454, 44 or 500. And very few I'm pretty sure carry 45's. Are those going away?
I also don't pay much attention to guys wearing Spider-Man T-shirts.
our sherrifs dept carry glock 21. swat, some stupid kimber 1911....all .45.
The surrounding PD's when i was down in those parts...glock 21. for every city and counties of all 50 states...it aint THAT few, and the cartridge has had no problem with killing japs, krauts, NVK, hadjis and etc.
As far as preference, dont mistake logistics and weak gripping cry babies for good terminal performance.

I hate that goofy turd so much it makes me want to buy a 40 again.

I do still have 100's of brass, and dies. Along with close to 1500 rounds of ammo from the early barry years...gun is long gone.

I'm a huge fan of the .40, so I take everything that guy says with as much seriousness as a Saturday morning cartoon. He even pointed out things that are absolutely wrong, like how the .40 is always teetering on the edge of blowing up, what a joke. What's sad is that some people will just accept what he says as true when it couldn't be further from the truth, but that's the society we live in.

Yeah... Shooting competition is what keeps cartridges alive...
I think you would likely be quite surprised by the amount of 40SW shot every weekend. All the while people on forums are citing its demise every other day.

I shoot more 40SW than any other cartridge I own.. Because of that fact.

Strengths: basically free brass lying around. Can reach major PF for certain popular gun games without being near/at/above max SAAMI pressure. (And meets minimum diameter requirements for USPSA major in LTD and single stack.) Huge range of bullet weight options.

Weaknesses: Like the 9mm and other short-frame-sized semi-auto rounds, can get dangerous pressures/kabooms if you combine setback with lousy case support in the head.

Have you ever shot a 10mm? It's a high performance cartridge that makes one nostalgic about a time when men were allowed to be men and Americans were allowed to be Americans. It's like asking why the devotion to the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T. The 10mm is the most versatile auto cartridge ever developed. It's useful, it's American, it makes you feel like you've just touched off a little more than usual, like say, stepping into a 426 Hemi...

So men weren't allowed to be men until 1983(the introduction of the 10mm cartridge).

If I'm going to shoot a caliber just for the sheer fun of it, I'll shoot .44 Magnum from my Ruger revolvers. It don't get any more American than that.

I'll take a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 over a Charger.

I recently delved into 10mm and find the potential applications of the round to vastly outpace 40S&W, and I enjoy the cartridge as well.

However, that doesn't negate the use of the 40 S&W, based on application.

There is nothing macho about shooting 10mm, or any other cartridge. I shoot a 460 Magnum because I enjoy the laser like trajectory from a revolver. That doesn't make me He-man, nor does it make me feel manly. It just means I have another tool in my tool box.

40 S&W isn't going anywhere. James Yeager expresses opinions. He's allowed, just as I'm allowed to ignore him.

no. it is a small framed gun.

your turn ...

Lets go back to the Glock family, and maybe we could run through some models, and you could tell us what they are so possibly we could understand your point. I'll list some Glock's, and you can tell us whether it is a large or small frame, OK?

The forum goal is always to provide accurate information. We've done that. Nearly everybody understands the .38 Super and 9x23 Winchester will only fit in large framed semi-autos, those designed to handle longer cartridges such as the 10mm and .45ACP. We've made that clear.

Since this is a .40 S&W thread, everybody knows the .40S&W was developed to get slightly reduced 10mm power in a smaller framed gun. The 10mm is too long to fit in semi-autos designed for the 9x19. By shortening the 10mm round to create the .40S&W, which is essentially the same length as 9x19, they allowed the round to be chambered in small frame semi-autos. You cannot put .38 Super, 9x23 Winchester, 10mm, or .45 ACP in the same small framed semi-autos designed around the 9x19 or .40 S&W, they all require large framed semi-autos. The .357 SIG was a round designed to give .38 Super/9x23 Win/.357mag performance, but still fit in those small framed guns. If you could get .38 Super or 9x23 Win in those guns, there would have been no need for the .357 SIG.

The fact that murf disagrees really shouldn't be a concern of mine. I'll move on.

First time ive seen this guy, seems like a real buttwiff. Props to balrog on post 12,great post. And yes ill stick to my "niche" guns, you can keep the 40. Not that I have anything against it.

40 sucks and 9mm rules or is it 9mm sucks 40 rules I need to check my calendar to see which is correct at THIS time and date because it will change again,
shoot what you like who cares about what internet commandos say about the 9 vs 40 vs 45 they will be here for decades to come there is no best and only one caliber we all like different ones and we have a choice get all 3 and be happy,
internet commando's are as about as useful as chicken sh*t on a fence post 9 vs 40 vs 45 bla bla bla >>>> this has been debated for a decade now bla bla bla ......

No, but before the 10mm there was the .44-40 and .45 Colt for those who wanted a little more. And before that, those who wanted more picked up the long sword or the big hammer. It's not rocket science. For as long as there has been testosterone, there has been those who like more "oomph." The .44 Mag is fun for that, as is the Chevelle. Our country was built by and for those people. That is why we have triple bacon cheeseburgers with 64 oz soft drinks. Eight-foot wide plasma screens. That's why Americans thought up putting a grenade launcher on an automatic rifle. For the rest of the world the 9mm and the Toyota Prius is fine. There is nothing wrong with that. I got nothing against the 9mm. Some people want more. I am one of those people. For me it is a Ram and a 10mm Auto.

A .44 Magnum shot from a long barreled stainless revolver is just way more manly than a 10mm Auto.

Heck if I had money to burn, I'd get a .500 S&W Magnum revolver. I even liked the Taurus .500 revolver too.
