Dick's says it will no longer carry "assault" weapons or "high capacity" magazines, and will not sell any gun to anyone under 21.

Be interesting to see if this also applies to their Field & Stream stores.

Edit: My mistake, the sale age is 21, not 25 as I'd previously written.

To the best of my knowledge, they haven't carried "assault" weapons since 2004. I wonder how much mature a 25-year-old is than a 24-year-old. Seems an odd, arbitrary number to sell an O/U shotgun or bolt-action (since that is a good description of the firearms they stock) to. Been in the local one a few times, to see if anything has changed. Then, I walk out empty-handed. Now, I won't waste my time walking their aisles.

Insurance companies have known for years that a Male's brain isn't quite settled out until they reach 25. They take more chances, they are more reckless, and generally get in a heck of a lot more accidents. Stats are stats. Doesn't mean we have to punish the under 25's. I haven't purchased from Dick's since forever because of their past silliness. I don't see the need to change.

The 17 year old CNN lead kid from the school that said he would not come back to school until new gun laws are passed---guess who is going to get a TV show on CNN.
It will be a great anti-gun show

I don’t think that’s new news, IIRC that has been their policy since I quit doing business with them.

No they were selling them when I bought my Remington 870. But they stopped not long after that. so it would have been about 2008 or 2009.

I wonder how legal it is for them to deny a sale to someone who can legally purchase their product. It seems awfully discriminatory. I'm guessing the ACLU wouldn't jump in to this one.

On a different note it was Dicks that sold the shot gun to the kid that shot up New River Community College. Funny how they did nothing after that.

I'm with others, I don't shop at Dicks as their prices are high, the service is poor and I'm not fond of their business practices.

Must be why the military wants them young.

@Hokie_PhD businesses can refuse service to anyone. Dicks doesn't sell the AR its their other store field and stream that sells more firearm related stuff at double the price. I wonder if they realize that by doing this field and stream which is predominantly a hunting store will crash and burn because now the guy who maybe wouldn't buy your gun at $100+ more than anyone else will also stop buying his ammo, clothes, calls, treestands, etc. I went into a dicks sporting goods the other day for some workout clothes and a pair of Nike pants that are the same material at Wal-Mart were almost $100 and the UA stuff too when i can go to the UA store and pay half that if not 3/4. I have been into field and stream and they make their money on uninformed people who think field and stream (magazine) its gotta be quality. I purchased bibs from them on black Friday that ripped the 2nd time out and shrunk one size when washed. Its all Chinese crap but the suit and tie people will continue to support them. When i seen $16 for a box of 9mm i said see ya and drove my butt over to cabelas and paid $11.

Speedo66,

You have it almost right. Dicks is quitting selling "assault guns" but is raising the age limit to 21.

"Dick's Sporting Goods, one of the largest sports retailers in the US, will stop selling assault-style weapons and will require gun buyers to be at least 21 years old, the company's CEO Ed Stack announced Wednesday morning.

Beginning today, DICK'S Sporting Goods is committed to the following:

We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK'S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.

  • We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.
  • We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.
  • We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.
At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations:

  • Ban assault-style firearms
  • Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21
  • Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks
  • Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law
  • Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms
  • Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks
We hope others join us in this effort to let our kids know that their pleas are being taken seriously.

OP, they do say in their official press release that they are removing scary black rifles from all their stores (incl F&S).

They don't have to sell certain things to me, and I don't have to buy them! Aint America (still relatively) great? (ETA: Sorry-looks like BSA1 was a little faster on the trigger).

CEO for Dicks was on ABC. Said they did sale
ar15 in the Field & Steam stores, but no longer and no high capacity mags.
Will not sell any gun to anyone under 21.

It will be a great anti-gun show

If what you say is true then now you know why they trotted him out in front of the camera every chance they got. Age identification is a great way for CNN to shamelessly pander to millenials and children who don't know any better. "Hey, look, kids! We're just like you!"

I sent them an email.

[email protected]
Waste of time and stress! Calling some call center and telling off a minimum wage employee who is just doing what they are told to pay the bills isn't going to help and just make someone else life hell. You wanna make a difference and get a point across stop shopping there. Those emails go to some 3rd party and not the CEO who decided to do this. :)

To each their own.

Besides, I'm not calling up anyone and yelling at them. Emails are more effective and they're recorded.

I have a single paragraph saved on my phone for when companies do this and all I have to do is find their web address, hit it, cut, paste, send.

Takes about a minute since I'm fast.

Actually the paragraph is pretty polite and I'm sure there's a graph somewhere at company meetings regarding major decisions and their result as to the effect on their bottom line...decreasing sales, negative feedback and less money.

Edit : How do you think the anti's do it? They flood their servers with mail urging companies into taking a stance against the Second Amendment, they applaud them when they do and then they don't shop there after (hard to do that from their mom's basement and when all their money goes to weed and cheetos).

It's high time we got into the act and made our voices and our spending dollars heard and felt.

Quit spending money there for anything.

These businesses too...

Sent them feedback, stating that due to their recent policy statement in regard to so-called "assault weapons", that I would never again set foot in any of their stores.

Dick's can deny sale or service to anyone they like. It could easily be perceived as age discrimination and it's a legit stance.

It's their choice on what items they want to sell.

I don't shop there as they don't exist in my area.

They are standing for what they believe in, or at least they are trying to use this tragedy to market to their target consumers.

They haven't lost my business, but they never had it to begin with. I just have little reason to ever venture into one of their stores now.

I don't own AR style guns, but I've had two in the past. I just don't need them or care much about them. None the less, I don't believe in the slippery slope we are on.

Dick's is a glorified golf shop that carries a few shotguns and rifles. I worked there for a bit behind the gun counter. It helped keep food on the table... They sell substandard outdoor gear and a few guns, its a joke. I haven't set foot in one since I quit almost 10 years ago.

Never has been on my radar! There is one near by but for me, Academy Sports kicks their rear.
More of a "soft goods" sports store. They are irrelevant to me.

I actually saw or heard somewhere that a human was involved in the killing of those kids----but I can't remember where?

Dick's isn't a fruitful place to buy guns anyway. The atmosphere at the one near me is "wannabe upscale Fudd." No bargains or selection there.

Small loss.

I buy my ammo and reloading components from a local business that's been here since 1947.

I buy my firearms from another local family owned business or internet dealer/local FFL.

I think I've been in the local Dick's maybe twice. Just isn't anything in that store that I want to pay a premium for.

There is hardly ever anyone in their parking lot. I'm not sure how they stay in business. Probably running ammo specials on waterfoul loads.
