Finally snagged a S&W 58

Fantastic find! In that kind of condition I could care less about the box and paperwork! At one time I had both a Model 58 and a Model 57. Traded one in on a 9mm. auto and had to sell the other for some much needed cash. Would love to have either of them back.

That is one rare pistol, and it looks great! Has it been reblued?

As I recall the primary customers for the fixed sight model was Police, but sales were low. The magnum version was too heavy and too much recoil and there was some issue about the non magnum rounds, but I forget what the problem was. Should be a great gun with magnums. Lucky you.

Great Score! I was big into the .41 Mag back in the 80's. Did a lot of loading and shooting with Model 57 and 58. Funny thing is I would up shooting the 58 more than I did the 57 unless we were shooting really long range. That was really the start of my obsession with fixed sight revolvers. Now days unless it has a red dot, I'd rather shoot fixed sight than adjustable sight on anything I own. Seeing your 58 brings back memories and one day I'm going to get back into the .41 mix. congratulations

A .41 is on my list. Haven’t decided which, but one like that is definately in the running. Good score. Take care of it.

Nice! I wanted a 58 for many years, but figured I'd never get one. Friend of mine, and a fellow .41 shooter, wanted to get rid of his... who am I to say no? I found it interesting how different it is compared to my 4" 57... the smaller trigger and hammer, and the different barrel profile.

Do yourself a favor... go find a set of Pachmayr Grippers or something to shoot it with... those Magna grips are unforgiving. I shot mine with them, once. Just once. After I found my middle-finger knuckle, we went and got a set. It's a real looker with those Magnas, but we go shooting with the Grippers.

I think after reading this post, that I might have to relive my 41 Mag days. I always liked the .41 over the 44. Either is a great gun to hunt with and I may just have to pick me up a long barrel 57 and take it to the woods. I really like hunting with the .357 but some of the Hogs we are running into, a little more bullet wouldn't hurt and since I've sworn off the 44, I guess there is nothing left to do but restart the .41 trail again. Gee Steve, thanks for getting my .41 juices flowing again. Your original post just probably cost me $1000 with another gun, dies and bullets! Oh well, I'd piss it away on some sort of gun or guns anyway.

For me and S&W N frames it's always been Pachmayr Grippers or Presentation grips.

Carried this one for 13 years as a LEO. It looked as good as yours back in 1966.
The only ammo available back then was the hunting rounds and they were brutal with the factory PC magna grips.

I couldn't afford the $12.50 for target grips, so I destroyed the magna grips to get the hardware to make myself a set of "PC targets." The original grips would probably go for more than my gun today.

We survived some serious social encounters. The gun did what it was designed to do and got us home at the end of the shift several times.

Technically, I think they are Gripper Decellerators... they have the cushioned backstrap. I have big hands and they fit my hands very well.

Here they are on my 657 Classic...

Mines's 1969 production also . #S327xxx. The factory grips were not numbered but the original owner, a retired motorcycle policeman ( a close friend) assured me they came with the gun and he noticed they weren't numbered also . That's it in my avatar, it's wearing Ahrend's Retro Combats in dark red Cocobolo .
Even though the originals aren't numbered I put them , along with the Tyler-T Grip Adapter my buddy used with them , away for safe keeping. The Ahrends are more comfortable for shooting.

I had a set of Hogues on my 686... they would pound my hand with full-house .357 loads. Great with .38's...

I personally really like the "modified grips". Not only do I find them attractive, but they have a whole lot of Character. I have a 3" Model 10 that was carried by a rural deputy that later became sheriff. One side of the Diamond Magnas is almost completely smooth from daily carry. To me they are beautiful.
