What bugs me most about the hazmat fee, they don't do anything special for that fee, no special handling. It's just another way to pick our pockets.

Depending on the nature and material involved many items that are shipped under "HAZMAT" the shipping/transporter has to have special endorsements on their license in order to drive. The Hazardous Material also must be listed on the shipping manifest with the nature and amount of material in case there is an accident and it needs to be dealt with. In the case of explosives and caustics the truck carrier must also be marked with HAZARD Placards. These trucks are also required to stop at RR crossings that do not have crossing gates. much of these materials are also not allowed to be loaded into airplanes.

So maybe the question you really should be asking is do gun powders and primers need to be listed as a Hazardous Material.

Pretty much anywhere has Hazmat shipping of $20-$30, but that is the same fee if you buy 1 lbs of powder or 15 lbs of powder.

Powder Valley generally gives the best pricing on powder for me. I try to stock up when the waive or reduce their hazmat and shipping, Although Grafs & Sons prices their powder slightly higher, their shipping is always a $7.95 flat fee and Hazmat is always $10.00. If I cant wait for Powder Valley, I'll order primers and powder from Grafs.

Yes, I don't believe these companies just pocket that money.

If it still is as it was in the '80s, companies that dealt with hazmat had to be bonded and place a certain amount of money into that bond each time they ship. and gated or not, we had to stop at all RR crossings. And take certain routes to avoid driving in heavily populated areas. And a load can't be left unattended while it was in route, or had to be parked in a designated haven. But back then there were only a handful of placards that covered a general category. Now a days it seems they have different numbers to sub-categorize them.

Anyone remember when the Hazmat fee started out and how low it was? Just a good example of any kind of fee or tax that get suggested, they start low for support, but once established........ :)

Now would be a good time to write/call our law makers .... May not help ...May not hurt either....
The $5 charge was plenty ...

I need a few bricks of primers and 2-3 pounds of various powders.

You really need to order in bulk to make the hazmat/shipping fees offset any local prices. That means ordering primers by the sleeve pf 5000, powder by the case, etc.

I have been lucky enough to use my local shotgun club for these items. He orders a truckload of targets and the same company puts our components on that truck for zero hazmat and shipping. His mark-up for members is 10% of his cost.

I haven't had a local or regional full service reloading supply source for a long time. Academy has some stuff. If I wanted a pound of Acme Different powder to try, I would get it there for convenience. But if I liked it, I would order in quantity from Powder Valley, Graf's, or Midsouth.

A friend pays for all purchases with a Cabelas affinity credit card. He applies his kickback credits to reloading supplies at the Cabelas store 70 miles away.

I have never ordered reloading supplies online so I have a few questions.

1) Who has the best prices on primers and powders along with Hazmat?

2) How often, if any, free hazmat or shipping occurs and from which websites?

3) Is there a minimum price that gives free hazmat and shipping?

4) Do I have to be home to sign for the shipment?

I have a mom and pop shop ( almost 70miles round trip) that I usually buy from, but I see powder valley beats the mom and pop prices by a lot but they want $30 for hazmat and shipping.

Mom and pop shop is $32-34-1k primers and $30-32-pound for Varget. I need a few bricks of primers and 2-3 pounds of various powders.
If you live near Canton, there is a Fin, Fur, & Feather outlet. The one near my work has reasonable pricing. $171.99 for 8 lb. Varget.

Here in Montana, you have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get about anywhere other than the town you live by.

Understand that, sister that was long time in Roundup and now in Lewistown. She once told me it was 2mi from the house to the end of the dive-way to the mailbox.

Middleburg Heights and Ashland are ones I frequent, but working 48hrs week and school 24hrs week I never have time for the 40min drives.

I would suggest you check daily on line with the major suppliers if you are purchasing in bulk either primers or powder. Figure in the free or reduced hazmat fee against what the shipping cost is going to be. If you don't want to wait for the big sales, go local. Even if you pay $15 more for your order, it is but a few beers at a local tavern rather than waiting to save a few bucks.

One tip- If you have Brownell's EDGE for $50/year, you always get free shipping so all you need to do is keep track of the $.01 hazmat offer from that seller.

Based on your needs - it may not even be worth shopping around much - just pay the price at your local store.
I frequently find myself spending hours of research and feel great that I may have saved $10 - when I may have spent $25 worth of my time - LOL.

Plan ahead as buying in bulk is the best way of coarse and getting others to buy with you will definitely spread that Haz-Mat and shipping out further.
Try finding the nearest gun clubs and especially if you can find ones shooting USPSA or IDPA - we shoot a lot and 1/3 of our folks are reloaders.
Not sure where you are but go to www.practiscore.com and you can find the nearest clubs with competitors. Best of luck. :)

Well hopefully getting my taxes done today and if I get good news I maybe swinging by the local shop (its on the way home from the tax man) and pickup some supplies.

1lbs Varget
1lbs IMR 4198
2k CCI 500 SPP
1lbs HP-38
200 CCI LRP.

Its still good to know how the online process works and who to look at when ordering. I need to get my butt in gear and shoot these test rounds of RMR 124gr RN, MPR and MW I have sitting around and then place an order with them for bullets and some of his bright fired 38spl cases.

I have almost exclusively now used Powder Valley. Even when they dont have free hazmat and shipping. I try to bunch up my purchases to at least 5000 primers at a time and I try to order powder in 8lb jugs when it makes sense. I found that even if they dont have the free hazmat which they run occasionally (sign up for there emails) they seem to have much better prices than everyone else that it negates the free shipping from elsewhere. and they ship fast too!

+1

On nice thing about ordering online is you can usually get everything you are looking for in one shot.
Delivered to your door.

OK Hazmat is $20 so spend $20 or 2 hours of my time going to 3 different stores to get what I want plus say $5 worth of gas.

I'd check Powder Valley, Grafs, Midsouth Shooters Supply, 3rd Generation, Brownells and Wideners.
Widners no longer does supplies and I would add Natchez but that list is a good start.

There is also value down the road in helping support the local shops and keeping them in business. Many times the cost difference in an order isn't large enough to matter, so why not get your stuff same day?

It looks like your questions have been answered several times. But heres what I do. I like Powder Valley so I use them. I get a few shooting buddies together and order the maximum amount that will ship in one box. I'm usually the one that coordinates this. I'll divide the shipping and hazmat by the number of units which adds about 50 cents to each unit. By unit, I mean jug of powder, carton or case of primers, ect. Powder Valley will mix primers and powder in the same shipment. There are other places with cheaper prices or shipping but Powder Valley usually has everything that I want while some others often don't. They messed up on my last order and they were very helpful getting it straightened out.
