Multi-Load .22 rifle

Most bolt actions (or any manually operated) will function with all three rounds.
Semi autos have to be tuned to the power levels - also may have feeding issues with shorter rounds.

to stay reliable with all three a tube magazine should be best. i like the rossi 62 for the mix of ammo.

Surprisingly, the 5 round box magazine for a CZ452 and CZ455 feed .22 shorts very well. Reportedly, the new CZ457 uses the same magazine. However, I haven't tried mixing ammo in the 5 round magazine and I haven't tried the 10 round box magazine at all.

Other than that, the tube magazine guns seem to be tried and true. My old Marlin 39AS will certainly feed a mix of .22 ammo very well.

Cooey Model 60, if you can find one (used!), holds 22 shorts or 11 LR, or you can mix them. Mine is a shooter, despite its trigger, age and round count, using iron sights.

Remington 552 will shoot L's & LR's , need to eject shorts manually ; )

ya i got the 24 inch octagon gallery gun. the thing is stupid accurate.

There are Ruger 10/22 magazines that are modified to feed shorts, I bought one.

I would presume that you would need a reduced power recoil spring to make a 10/22 cycle with shorts, I don't know, I put the 10/22 short magazines guts into a 77/22 body where it works perfectly in my 77/22.

I have an old Remington 550 Semi Automatic which shoots 22 short, long and long rifle. They used a floating chamber and that rifle has always shot fine. I also like my CZ 452 as a bolt gun as well as my old Remington 510, 511 and 512 rifles. The 510 is a single shot bolt but the 511 and 512 rifles are tube magazine and box magazine bolt guns. You need to decide what action you want. The 550 gun is an older version but I see them at gun shows now and then.

The 550 by Remington eats everything!

Most any lever action will do it. My Marlin 39a holds 25 shorts in the tube and shoots the high velocity CCI shorts very accurately.

I used to have a Stephens/Springfield model 87a that was designed to shoot all 3. It wouldn’t function as a semi auto with shorts, but instead as a straight pull bolt rifle. There is a hole in the receiver directly across from the charging handle and you push the charging handle in to keep the bolt from moving when shooting shorts. There are also some non functional vents cut in the receiver. My only guess is that it was made in the 60’s and it just kind of made it look futuristic or jet aged? That’s another one I wish I hadn’t sold. I’ll learn one of these days.

My suggestion would be to consider your reasons for wanting to shoot Shorts and the practically extinct Long. If the answer is variety I’d recommend finding a rifle chambered exclusively for Shorts. You’ll save yourself the hassle of scrubbing the chamber incessantly and having too fast a twist rate.

If you’re simply looking for a do-all rifle to occasionally run a few Shorts through then consider trying CCI Quiet or a few varieties of subsonic lr, most of which are more readily available and cheaper. I set up a rifle to shoot Shorts exclusively and was disappointed with the results, FWIW.

Marlin 39A, Remington 552. I have both. The Marlin is a nicer gun, but commands a much higher price.

I doubt you ever will see a 22 Long on a store shelf. According to an old Cartridges of the World 6th Edition the 22 L and 22 LR share the same case dimensions. The 22 S came along as early as 1857. The 22 L came along around 1871 pre dating the 22 LR of around 1887. Originally the 22 S used a 4 grain fine black powder loading, the 22 Long used a longer case and a 5 grain loading of black powder. The Short and the Long were both originally loaded with black powder and a 29 grain bullet. The 22 Short used a .423" case length and the 22 Long used a .595" case length. When the 22 Long Rifle came along it used the same case length as the 22 Long it also used a 5 grain black powder charge but a 40 grain bullet. Then came along smokeless powder propellant and everything changed. Anyway, the 22 Long and 22 Long Rifle share identical cases. There was even a 22 Extra Long at one time along with a pile of other 22 cartridges. Again, this is my read in Cartridges of the World Sixth Edition and it does conflict with the Wikipedia which claims a difference in case length between 22 L and 22 LR.Reflecting a .613" case length 22 L and 22 LR.

Anyawy, I doubt we will see a box of 22 Long anytime soon.

The Savage 24 is a good one and you get a shotgun with it (Also turn it into a pellet/blank gun), any single shot bolt action works well too the Remington 510’s can be picked up cheap. Their 572 pump is what I use for armadillo killing in the yard and there are a number of lever guns that will too.

The smaller .22’s are hard to find in town these days but they are still out there.

The most common you come across are the CCI CB caps. Especially if you are looking for long.

FWIW the .22 longs have the same case length as the .22 LR so they often work in magazine fed bolt actions as well. I use them in my 77/22, haven’t tried them in my American yet but I bet they will work in it too.

Actually, I was at a gun show last weekend and several sellers had new 500 round bricks of .22 longs and shorts. I think they were CCI brand.

Well, my bad on that note. Apparently CCI and others still market the 22 Long. I see it with several distributors. With the 29 Grain bullet.

And the same velocity as the shorts, but the bigger case means lower pressure. They still have application in using old black powder firearms that shouldn't be hammered with .22 LR pressure & bolt thrust.

I've got a full box of .22Long, Winchester red and grey box, that I bought here recently at a LGS, as I've got a Winchester model 62 that shoots S,L,LR. It is deadly accurate with all three. BTW the shorts are Aguire or something to that nature.
