I want a 22 cal rifle, bolt action, that will shoot 22 short, long, and long rifle. I want a rifle that uses a magazine that fits under the action, no tube loading.
Any suggestions as where and what to buy?

Many thanks,

marlin, is the only mfgr i can think of, that currently makes this.henry does, but it is lever. remmy does , but it is semi auto.

tube fed is the only way (other than single shot) to reliably feed different 22 rimfire variants. If it is different levels of power/noise you are looking for, super colibri, 22cb, 22lr and 22stinger all will feed in a box mag (same length), and offer 3 levels of power. The only advantage 22shorts have over cbs in a modern 22LR are capacity in tube fed lever or bolt guns. The CZ 452 varmint is about the best 22 you will ever fire, but a marlin 925 remmie model 5, or savage MKII are decent low priced rifles, all are box mag bolt actions. The henry (tube fed lever rifle) is great fun with 22 shorts in the yard, holds around 20, plenty accurate for 50 yard plinking, or for pest control, and you can always use full power 22s.

No they make things for mags that allow it to fire short and long .22 rounds. I know my .22 mossberg takes short all I have to do is put a little insert into the magazine and boom its set for shorts. The insert came with all the mags so yes thier are options that can take both short and long in magazine form.

I think the Marlin 925 will do the job very well. I am now using a borrowed Marlin Glenfield with a 7 round box magazine and it works well with any ammo I have tried. Many thanks to all.

How 'bout a Ruger 77/22? You could accessorize it as a 10/22 then...I have the lever model (model 96) and couldn't be happier. I think a 77/22 or 10/22 will be my next purchase. Only trouble is you'd have to single-shot the shorts....If you want shorts only because they're quiet, you can always use CCI CB Longs, the same quiet load as a short, just feeds better.

You can get 10/22 magazines from Volquartsen that are modified to feed Shorts. 10/22 magazines work fine in a 77/22.

I will look into the CCI CB longs as they might be just what I want. I have a 10/22 but it will not feed the shorts.

Matt-man: Those have officially moved to the top of my must-get list. My model 96 is my favorite toy at the moment, it'd be nice to have the ability to use shorts in it sometimes I guess.

The older Remington 541-S and T models will feed shots, longs, and long rifle 22 ammo. I've never mixed different ammo in the same magazine though. They have a great reputation for accuracy rifle to rifle. Cost for one will be in the $600 area for a nice one.

I honestly prefer a tubular magazine. I can load them faster with far less finger strain/pain. The tubular magazines just aren't as pretty on a 22 rifle.

Remington 581 or 581-S both will feed and shoot S, L or LR. Both a great shooters. You just have to look around for one in the used gun markets.

On an absolute whim I just bought what you were looking for.

I picked up a CZ452 Varmint and 3 mags. I then bought a Leupold VX-II 4-12x AO adjustable scope and TC rings for it. Today was my first day at the range. So far I have just under a grand into the whole setup with case, cleaning rod (my dewey would not fit) and other "stuff" to fill out the package.

Once I bore sighted it and started to play around with it, I found the gun to be quite accurate. In a 7 mph gusty wind, I was shooting around 1 to 1.5" 50 shot groups at 100 yrds off the bench. The trigger is reasonably light at 3 lbs 11 onz, but has a ton of creep. I figure I will get about 2 to 3 thousand rounds down it and do a home style trigger job on it. There are kits out there to do that.

The gun is pretty nice. Good wood and seems well made. All in all it is a reasonable start to decide if I really want to buy a nice Cooper in 22lr. I was having second thoughts about dropping that much money on a 22lr, so I figured the CZ would be easier to turn if I find a bolt 22 not much fun.

Moral of the story? Don't go to a gun shop bored with a credit card.

It was! The family was away and I had to work, so my boss and I just were walking around and one of us had to buy something. I lost so out I went with a 452 varmint. It seems like a nice bolt and I wish it were not so hot here otherwise I would be shooting it more!
