The internet is blowing up with the reviews on the new ruger 57. My biggest reason for not trying was the cost of ammo. I have also read it sucks to reload. Anyone having luck and what's the cost.

I’d be very interested to see the chamber design of the Rugers. The FN’s typically have had generous shoulders which blow out considerably, meaning we have to replace them with sizing dies. Unfortunately, that sometimes means collapsing the shoulder instead of pushing it back. The varnish on factory cases to aid in extraction may also not be needed for the Ruger design. Time will tell.

They both shoot the same ammunition from the comparisons I've seen. Imo they did it backwards and should have released quality cheaper ammo first. That fn ammo is spendy.

Yes gotta load hot for reliability. Blue dot and 40 vmax if I remember. Only washed cases .

Edit. Sorry was true blue powder.

The issue with the 5.7 is the shoulder blowing way forward when it fires/ejects. It then has to be pushed way back when sized. This causes failures in the shoulder area that are hard to predict, which means short case life, toss it before it fails..

If Ruger has managed to stop this by somehow keeping the action locked long enough that would be great.

Should be a cool gun. Maybe if it takes off others will offer cheaper ammo.

Appreciate that info! I found something similar in .22TCM in factory ammo. I resize to bump the shoulder back a minimum amount and it seems to work. No idea if that would work for 5.7 reloads (feeding). Something to consider...

Sounds sorta like me with the PS-90.

Reeeeeallly wanted one, but I have this little personal rule about having to be setup to load for all of my centerfire calibers, especially the stupid-'spensive-ammo ones.

One of the fellas here (Trent, IIRC) started a 5.7x28 Reloading Adventure several years ago and was kind enough to share his experiences here with us. I looked forward to every new entry.

I came away from that with the realization that I am not willing to expend the effort required to reload 5.7x28 ... not even close. :(

I have a hundred or so empty brass that I have tried to give away on here about three times and no takers so far in the pay it forward. Guess reloading them is not that popular at all. I will sell them for scrap soon if no one wants them. The pistol is not on my list of wants due to expensive ammo and pain to reload troubles.

ETA I have given the brass away to a member here.

I tried it in an AR-57 upper, was bored by it, and since it was more trouble to load for, sold the upper and got rid of most of the components, still have some brass I think. I must have really disliked it, as I don't see any record of it in my pistol or rifle reloading log, so I guess I deleted that tab. Yep, looked at some old pics and the "Rifle" log had a 5.7 Tab.

I leave the primer in place. I make a 180 gr lead tip round nose bullet. They shoot pretty good so far. I haven't had a chance to do any long-distance shooting with them.

I don't know what it is about the 5.7, but I've long been naturally obsessed with not on the FN pistol, but also the PS90 (cuz, let's face it...not gonna get a P90). Sadly, we can't get some of the ammo Fn makes for the thing and what we can get is kind of neutered, it's also expensive. Paul Harrell has spoken many times about the iffy reliability of the FN 5.7 pistol and his reviews are honest and less than glowing. He just did one comparing the new Ruger to the FN and it seems he actually prefers the Ruger.

To add to that, I've read many times that reloading 5.7 is super tricky.

Because of this...I just stay away from it altogether.

I have a thread on this some time ago. After doing the math it was not worth it to me, The cost of just the projectiles and the initial set up. Dies and I would not load without a case gauge. The pay back time/ amount was to long.
Got Federal ammo in bulk when the had a rebate. I do not shoot it (FN) enough to hassle with reloading.

There are also several other threads

Now that ruger had come out with a reasonably priced pistol, and rumors of a carbine comming I was thinking that it would become more affordable. Maybe in the future? I also keep hearing about a coating on the case, which I dont know if that is important to function or not. A pass for now.

Yes, the coating is VERY important, therefore you should not tumble the brass as it will wear of they coating.

Just got my March "American Rifleman" today. There is an article on the Ruger-57. Beautiful pistol.....but I'd never heard of the cartridge before today........so looked it up here on THR, and of course here I am......

Twenty round magazine.......have to admit that got my attention.....then I got to reading about this cartridge I knew nothing about. Too old to learn hard new tricks like reloading this appears to be......maybe I better stick with reloading .40S&W and .45 ACP!.........................and just shooting my cheaper to shoot, but also beautiful, .22 LR Ruger Mark III 22-45 Target. ;)

Of course the above is no match for the power, self defensability, or military coolness of the new center fire pistol.......

Do check out the different views.......nice looking gun. Who knows what the future will do to my self control and will.:)

I also read the “American Rifleman” article this morning and wanted to explore the reloading of the cartridge before thinking about buying the 57. I have a policy of not buying a gun chambered in a caliber that I won’t/can’t reload. I’ve been intrigued by the FN pistol but never explored reloading it because the gun is out of my price range.

After reading the posts here and not really finding a single positive one, I’ve decided to move on. Thanks to all for the input

There is a forum dedicated to the 5.7x28 with lots of useful information. I had a 5.7 upper for my AR and sold it. I never bothered to even try to reload for it since it is a hassle to do so. The round is very sensitive to even small changes in powder charge. I don't know about in pistols/pistol magazines, but you DO want to leave to coating on the cases if you want them to feed in a P90 magazine. And everyone is correct about the necks getting blown out.

Yes they can be reloaded. Is it worth the effort to reload the 5.7? What is you time (and getting frustrated) worth?

I can link the other forum if it's okay and people are interested.

Same for me, had an upper, did reload though, not worth the effort, and in an AR it was boring, sold it.
