Those Dadgum Varmints

Built one a couple months ago. AR15 flattop, BCM pencil barrel, Aero Upper and Lower, lightest parts I could find, (within reason) it weighs about 6 pounds 6 ounces
with a loaded 20 round mag, small 6X scope, and no sling. I can shoot about 2MOA
with it, but somebody better could probably do 1MOA.

In the late 90s I purchased a Remington 700VS in 223 and have slayed quite a few prairie dogs with it. This model came with a 1:12 twist heavy barrel and an HS Precision stock.

What kind of "varmints" we talking about? Garden variety bunny's, prairie dogs, or something bigger? I probably wouldn't use a 22-250 in my back yard on Mr bunny wabbit.

I'm not going to shoot a bunny wabbit in my backyard. In fact I would like to have a bunch of them grazing and I might not have to mow as often. Out in the boonies I'll have a 223 most of the time, a 22-250 now and then.

My favorite varmint rifle: Rem 700 Light Varmint Stainless, Fluted .223.

(picture angle makes the barrel look longer...actually only 21".

The rifle is light and short, so is very nice to carry for long walks in the fields down back.

In Kansas rabbits are considered varmints and,as such,there is a 365 day "season" for them. A 22 works fine for them and I have a friend who makes a darned good hassenpffer .
For larger varmints a 223 is near to hand and has proven "handy"...

I like 223. I have even been known to kill feral hogs and deer with it.

I have a ar setup with a heavy 21" barrel and 3 lb jp trigger for prairie dogs. also a Remington vss in 223.

Remington 700 SPS Varmint, 26" 1 in 12" twist heavy barrel in .223 with a single shot adapter. Also a Stag Model 6 5.56 NATO, 24" bull barrel 1 IN 8" twist, in case the gophers or prairie dogs try a mass charge, so I can bring a couple 30 round magazines into play.

I grew up on a farm in Texas. No season on rabbits there either. Since they eat crops I got to shoot ever one
I could. Jackrabbits became dog food. Cottontails went in the kitchen. My mother knew how to make hassenpffer.

NM has no season on rabbits either but they are a bit scarce right now. They must be in the low point of their population cycle.

A 7 twist 30” barrel slings a 75 grain HPBT out at over three thousand feet a second. I have hit a rabbit with it, but when I got there, just a few minutes later, a bear or coyote must have eaten it! There was only a big red snow stain and tufts of fur left...
